med or chem?

hey guys,

im having a bit of a crisis - i’ve wanted to do med for the last 2/3 years but now im unsure as to whether i still want to do it and if i want to do chem instead. I’ve really enjoyed chem in sixth form and honestly the state of NHS in england isn’t super great e.g. lack of placements and strikes so im not sure if i fully want to do med anymore. I’m also scared that ill really struggle in med school as im the type to burn out quite often (so a 6yr degree isnt optimal for my stress levels…)

however, i dont know what i could do with a chem degree if i dont want to go into full time research etc and med provides so many pathways.

does anyone have any advice pls !!

I’d really recommend getting some work experience in a hospital. I was in the same situation as you but instead of chem I was choosing between med and bio. I ended up doing my work experience in a hospital and it really helped my decision! There is also plenty of things you can do with a chem degree and research is just one of them. Also, if you decide to go into chem and then want to do med in the future you could probably apply for a masters in medicine (you’ll have to check requirements for application but normally chemistry BSc is accepted)! Med school can defo be difficult but if you want to you’ll manage to get through it

i’ve done work experience and i really enjoyed. im honestly just most worried about the constant stress for the next 40 years as well as opportunities to develop further in the UK looking rather bleak…

The main thing is that you do something you enjoy. The main reason people do medicine is because even though it is incredibly difficult they find the experience very rewarding. You’re going to have to ask yourself whether you are ready to deal with the issues of med to get to the rewards.

Sorry I can’t help more - unfortunately this is a question which has an answer that varies highly among different individuals. In the end, whatever you decide to do, if you enjoy it you can keep doing it, and if you don’t you can always change your mind.
