PPE without a major interest in Philosophy

Currently Yr 12 and planning on applying for Economics and Politics courses. A levels Maths, Further Maths, Economics and History.

As the title suggests I am considering applying for PPE at Oxford as 1/5, however my passion doesn't lie in Philosophy.

How important is this in terms of application, interview etc?

From reading it seems that after Yr 1 you can specialise so I could reduce to mainly an Economics/politics syllabus. But without a real passion for Philosophy would this be a waste of an application?

Have you considered the History and Economics course at Oxford?

This is a very strong suggestion. No point taking PPE just because it sounds flashy.

The Cambridge Economics degree might suit your 'taste' better, perhaps? 🙂

Why would you want to do an interdisciplinary course where you are not interested in one of the disciplines?

I'd prefer not to do straight Economics. As it becomes alot of maths... and I'd prefer a more balanced degree.

I have looked at it. And whilst History was always my preferred subject, I feel as though A levels are where I will leave my history studies.

Oh, its not because it sounds flashy... . Its the only course available that combines Economics and Politics.

We do cover some Economic philosophy in Economics and I find that very interesting. It's more at the 'are we real' level that I'm unsure about. I suppose I quite like having definitive answers at the end of a problem to solve. And as the course suggests that after term 1 Yr 1 you can streamline it towards 2 disciplines I was asking opinions on how accurate this is.

I am sure within any compulosry philosphy there will be a large amout of Systematic Philosophy (which is very much the English tradition that Oxford follows). This is less concerned with abstracts like "Are we real?"; though it is still rather more abstract than the other subjects. Looking up the basics of Systematic Philosophy would be a good thing to do though, as it certainly is more concrete than the esoteric Greek/European philosophy you're probably worried about. Still, there may well be some mention of "Am I real?" and that type of thing, almost guaranteed, but not as much as you may think.
