Re-applying to university after dropping out of second year

Hello ,

I am currently a second year computer science student us not enjoying their course. I have already decided to drop out at the end of second year and apply to a different course at a different university. I am planning to apply to pharmacy. I know that computer science and pharmacy are quite drastically different but I have realised that I enjoy the sciences more than computer science. For context I did chemistry , biology and maths at a level and achieved the grades A*AA respectively. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on applying after dropping out in second year. For example with the personal statement can I still talk about my a - level subjects and what I enjoyed about them even though I did them two years ago. Additionally , is there anything that need to include to prove to unis that I am actually interested in pharmacy. I have done some courses online / read some books but I don’t have any in real life work experience. Is it vital that I find some. I have some work experience that I did in year 12 about drug development. Can I mention this or is it too old of an experience.

Sorry for the long message but I look forward to hearing people’s responses.

Thank you !

Hi @Kady77

You can and should absolutely mention your time in A-levels and how at the time you were torn between computer science and pharmacy but unfortunately ended up choosing the wrong one! It is definitely best to change your mind now rather than be stuck in a field you are not keen on for years. And two years is not THAT long ago in academia, that experience you gained in A-levels will stay with you. You can even mention specific topics in the sciences which you enjoyed that link to pharmacy. In terms of the drug development experience, you should also mention that, it is vital experience which also links to pharmacy.

I would also double check with student finance on the eligibility of your funding as you have already done two years and are heading into a new degree (contact them, let them know of your situation so you know where you stand).

Let me know if you have any other questions 🙂
