English Lit vs Creative Writing for Publishing?

I'm interested in working in publishing and love creative writing. Would a degree in just English Literature be better than one that combines English Literature and Creative Writing? Any advice from students in publishing or studying these courses? 😊

Hey there,

I think both courses would be equally suitable for a career in publishing for sure. If you have a look at careers advice websites such as Prospects it states that careers following English degrees include publishing. There are lots of combined literature and creative writing degrees I know Chester has an undergraduate degree combining lit, lang and creative writing and also as you’ll know, lots of single literature degrees so it’s up to your personal preference.

Good luck with the next stage of your academic journey!

There are also Publishing master programmes but if you mean undergraduate then both can be useful, it's up to you on what you think you want to try or do better at. I am in my final semester of English with Creative Writing bachelors. I would be so much happier if there was no linguistics in my programme but unfortunately there is. Some of my literature modules was great and some suckeddd because of a lecturer.

If I had the choice, I would have gone full Creative Writing programme though for undergraduate and then masters in publishing. I have switched my career aim to be a creative writing lecturer though since I believe publishing will be more hectic, pay is not that good and requires more social skills.

For bachelors, you can try finding English Literature and Creative Writing programme, having both in it, if you want.

For publishing masters, I saw Northumbria University and Manchester Metropolitan is really good for it.
