Accommodation and Student Finance - what you need to know

Accommodation
Lots of first years stay in halls of residence, which are typically blocks of flats managed by the university itself. Different halls of residence have different capacities - for example, some halls may have flats designed for seven or eight people whilst others may only accommodate three or four people. Have a look on your university's accommodation page for the specifics of each hall and consider your own preferences: you may want an en-suite or you might be happy to share a bathroom to save on rent.

Not all students stay in accommodation near the university. If you live nearby, it may make more financial sense to commute.

Once you've accepted your offer for a course (Firm choice), you'll receive more information on how to apply for accommodation at that university. Some universities also allow you to apply for accommodation if they're your insurance choice, but most recommend reaching out to them on or after Results Day if you happen to miss your Firm offer.

Student Finance
Within the UK, there are multiple branches of Student Finance and you should select your branch based on where you normally live (not where you're planning to study). These include:

Student Finance England (often abbreviated to ‘SFE’)

Student Finance Wales

Student Awards Agency Scotland

Student Finance NI

You can apply online to receive a tuition fee loan and/or a maintenance loan, with applications typically taking 4-6 weeks. The tuition fee loan will pay for your full tuition, but note that the maintenance loan can vary depending on parental income and your Student Finance branch.

Due to rising living costs, your maintenance loan may not cover your full expenses - so make sure to draw up a rough budget before you head to uni!

Applications for Student Finance typically open around late March or early April, so make sure to apply sooner rather than later to ensure your payments are scheduled on time! There's always one or two stories every year of someone you know who still hasn't received their first maintenance loan payment yet. 😅

Hope this helps and best of luck to any students currently receiving offers,
