Do I drop out?

Ok so here’s the situation.
I’m a first year neuroscience student in the uk and don’t get me wrong I do like my degree - but I don’t exactly find the job prospects thrilling.
I’ve been researching and I love the idea of becoming a mental health nurse.
What I need to figure out is whether to drop neuro now and start applying to nursing degrees OR finish my neuroscience degree and then start training to become a nurse???
Side note - my mum wants me to do psychiatry but for me idk it’s a very long expensive process and it’s hard af to get in - do I suck it up and to that instead?

Psychiatry is a medical specialism - does your mum understand that you would need to do a degree in medicine to become a psychiatrist?

In terms of funding (assuming you get your funding from SFE), nursing is considered an exception course so it is possible to finish your degree and then apply for nursing. However, that's six years of study before you will start earning. Are you prepared to do that?

At least try to complete your first year and then take stock. This would count in your favour on being accepted to another course, for example nursing 🧑*🍼 f you did decide to change direction.

P.s I wish I had leapt from librarianship to countryside management after my first year but fearful didn’t. Don’t be afraid to make the leap everything comes good in the end

Hi, if you're certain mental health nursing excites you more than neuroscience, switching now to a nursing degree can save time and get you into the career faster. Finishing neuroscience first is fine if you want the degree as a backup or for broader options, but it delays entering nursing. Only choose psychiatry if you genuinely love it, not just because someone else wants you to🙂.
