Is Nursing An Exemption Course?

I have several years of previous study on a course I unfortunately didn’t complete for health reasons. I have therefore used all of my tuition fee entitlement. However, I’m now hoping to go back to university this September to study Adult Nursing. Would I still get full funding for this course due to nursing being an exemption course? Also, if so, would this still stand when the new Liflelong Learning system comes in, providing I start the course this September? If a rep from SFE could answer this, that would be great! Thanks!

Hi there,

Can you confirm what university you want to attend? This would not be classed as Lifelong Learning as this does not start till January 2027.

Thanks, Drew

I’m hoping to attend either Derby University, Lincoln University, Plymouth University or Anglia Ruskin University. Whichever one I attend I would be studying Adult Nursing BSc.

Hi there,

I have checked these courses on our database and they are classed as an exception course so we would not take your previous study into consideration when assessing your entitlement.

Thanks, Drew

That’s great! Can I just confirm this would stand for the whole duration of the courses even though Lifelong Learning is starting in Jan 2027?

Hi there,

Yes it would be an exception course for the full time of the course nothing would change even when Lifelong learning is introduced.

Thanks, Drew

Thank you! Can I confirm the support would include both tuition fee loan and maintenance loan?

Yes, you would be awarded the Tuition Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan and any applicable supplementary grants.

Thank you! Can I just confirm that this still stands even though my years of prior study didn’t lead to a qualification? As in, I’m not someone who already has a degree doing a second degree, I’m someone who simply has years of prior study that didn’t lead to a degree as I had to leave my course due to ill health?

Yes, that's right - because the course is an exception we disregard all your previous study.

Thanks, Graeme

Hi, so sorry just have another question. If I did not get a place this September and had to reapply for September 2027 I would be starting my course under the new system, Lifelong Learning. If I started my course under this new system, would I still get full support to study Adult Nursing despite me already having years of previous study? Thank you!

Hi there. We don't have the information on exception courses for the Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) at the moment. This is all the information that has been released so far: Lifelong learning entitlement: what it is and how it will work - GOV.UK

Once there is confirmation on exception courses for the LLE, they should be updated on this website. There should be more information on this later on in the year. Thanks, Leah.
