Studying in Manchester: My Favourite Spots

One of the best things about studying in Manchester is the variety of places you discover along the way, whether that’s grabbing a quick lunch between classes or finding a quiet corner to study. Here are a few of my personal favourites in the endless list of places to visit, as a student at ULaw Manchester.

Food Finds

0161 Flamin Grill (The Place at 88 Portland Street) 0161 has become one of my go-to places for dinner with friends. The food is cheap, hearty, and portions are generous, the kind of place where you leave full without worrying about your budget, and you try to keep in your own friend circle, so others don’t find out about it.

Don Giovanni Italian Restaurant Manchester This is more of a top-end option and the kind of place perfect for celebrating milestones. My friends and I went for our end-of-year meal, and it felt special. Expect to pay around £30 per head, which is a treat compared to the usual student budget, but worth it for the experience.

Quick Lunches Near Uni For day-to-day food and for lunch between back-to-back classes, nothing beats the street just behind campus. Lidl is ideal for affordable snacks, and my personal favourite is the £2 Cheese & Onion pasty from Spar, quick, cheap, and surprisingly filling.

Christmas Market Area (Near Piccadilly Gardens) Even when the Christmas market isn’t running, the area is lined with around 10–11 permanent stalls. They’re all halal and serve everything from jerk chicken and shawarma to burgers and Chinese food. Prices are reasonable for street food, and the variety makes it easy to try something different each time. On sunny days, I’d grab something and sit in the gardens; on rainy ones, I’d head back to campus third floor or find a spot in City Tower.

Study Spots
When it comes to studying, my favourite place is the second floor of the University of Law Manchester building. It’s a quieter space with its own computer library, perfect for getting work done without distractions. I like that it’s close to food options, so I can easily step out for a quick break and come back recharged. For a more casual spot, the third floor works as well.

Final Thoughts
Living and studying in Manchester has shown me that the city really does have something for every budget and every mood. From a quick £2 pasty between lectures to a hearty grill dinner, and even the occasional £30 celebratory meal, there’s always somewhere to suit the moment. Pair that with quiet study spaces like the second floor at ULaw, and it’s easy to see why Manchester feels like such a great place to be a student.
