Clarification needed re funding allowance after compelling reasons accepted

Hi, I need clarification please re my future funding situation. I previously studied a 2 year foundation course at attended the second year to the end, but failed my final module and was unable to re-submit or re-take module due to long term health situation.

I have contacted SLC/SFE and they have accepted my evidence for compelling personal reasons. They replied that I 'have an addition year of funding which will be taken into account when I apply for student finance.

However, I do not know if this means I can apply for another foundation course (2 years) or whether I have sufficient funding for 3 years BA Hons.

As a mature student and the fact was my first course was 2 years, does this affect my allocation (ie 'gifted year').

I also need to know if I can apply for maintenance loan for the 2 or 3 years.

I'd appreciate some expert guidance please.

Hi Lapizlaz26,

For to further assist you with your query please answer the following questions:

What would be your preferred choice, 2 year foundation or the 3 years BA Hons?
What university do you want to apply to?
What is the exact course title?
Is this a Full Time or Part Time course?
How many years is the new course in total?
When are you planning to start your studies?

Thank you, Stephen.

Thanks for your reply.

My preferred option is full time 3 year BA Hons in Counselling and Mental Health at York St John. However I have a conditional offer for 2 year foundation degree elsewhere (also full time). Start date September 2026.

Hi lapizlaz26,

The previous study calculation is the course length + 1 additional year- previous study years (excluding CPR year(s))

This means that if you have 2 years previous study and 1 CPR year awarded and start a new 2 year course, the calculation would be 2+1-1= 2 years. That would mean that you would be fully funded.

If you do the 3 year course instead, the calculation would be 3+1-1= 3 years. Therefore you would be fully funded either way.

Thanks, Clare

Thank you for this info.

Would I also be able to apply for maintenance load for 3 years? (This was the other part of my original enquiry).

Many thanks.

Hi there,

Yes, you would be. The maintenance loan isn't blocked due to previous study. Thanks, Jason
