Mature Student Birkbeck Vs Uni of Law for LLB

I am planning to study for my LLB Law (am intending on a career in law and further study to achieve this after my LLB) from September and I have offers from both Birkbeck and University of Law. I will a mature student and be working full time alongside my studies which has limited my options to unis that offer evening or weekend teaching. Because UoL isn't a traditional uni it isn't on ranking lists etc so it is difficult to find any resources that offer direct comparison. Any advice on either uni would be appreciated.

I studied with the university of law and it was excellent. I did both the graduate diploma in law conversion course as my undergraduate degree was in English and I followed this with the lpc. The teaching and source materials were fantastic. There is also a really good alumni network that’s available to you after the courses have ended so in the sense of continuing support it’s in place and available. It was expensive and more than the fees at uni (I don’t know how it compares now) but I think it was well worth the extra money.

Hi, hope you’re well.

Firstly, well done on getting two good offers. Doing an LLB as a mature student and working full-time is a big commitment, and it is very important that you get it right in the right environment. Both Birkbeck and the University of Law offer a flexible approach, but they are very different. Firstly, Birkbeck is a part of the University of London and has a very good reputation for mature and working students. It is a traditional university, highly academically driven. If you want to be part of a conventional university, then it is a good choice.

It is a very traditional university and can be a bit theoretical and essay-based, which is good if you enjoy that sort of work and are a good independent learner. The University of Law is a specialist university. It is very focused on employability, skills, and preparation for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) or Bar pathway. Teaching is often structured in smaller groups with a more practical approach. While it is not ranked in the same way as traditional universities, it is well known within the legal profession because of its vocational focus and long history of training solicitors and barristers.

As a mature student working full-time, you might want to consider the following questions. Do you prefer academic depth and traditional university culture, or structured, practical and career-focused delivery? How important is flexibility in timetabling and assessment style? Which environment do you feel would better support you in balancing work and study?

For a career in law, what matters most in the long term is strong grades, legal work experience, and progression to the SQE or Bar training. Both routes can get you there. The key is where you believe you can realistically thrive while working full-time.

Kind regards,

Faith
