Question Regarding Eligibility for Student Finance After Withdrawal

Hello,
I have a question regarding my previous studies. I studied in the UK at GBS (Global Banking School) on a course with a Foundation Year.
I completed the Foundation Year with full grades, and during Year 1 I also achieved full grades (120 credits). Unfortunately, I was withdrawn at the end of the year due to absences, even though I passed all my modules.

GBS does not seem willing to take me back, even though I have documents proving that I had serious health issues at the time.

I have now found another university where I have the possibility to enter directly into Year 2, since I already hold Level 4.

My question is: if I am accepted into Year 2, am I still eligible to receive Student Finance for the remaining two years of the course both Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan?

Thank you in advance, and I look forward to your responses.

Hi Gogu66554,

If you only have those 2 years of previous study then you would be eligible for support if you are entering year 2 of the new course. That is because the previous study calculation is the course duration + 1 year- previous study years= entitlement.

If you are starting a new course which is 3 or 4 years in length the calculation would either be 3+1-2= 2 years or 4+1-2= 3 years. This means that you would be funded from year 2 which includes both the Maintenance Loan, Tuition Fee Loan and any applicable supplementary grants.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

Thank you for your previous response.

I was withdrawn during the 2024/2025 academic year, and I am now planning to start a new course at a different university in May, entering directly into Year 2.

Could you please advise me on the next steps?
Should I apply to the new university for direct entry into Year 2 first and then submit my Student Finance application after I receive an offer, or do I need to contact Student Finance before applying?

Thanks again for your help I’m looking forward to your advice.

Hi,

You can apply for the finance now for May, as this will be the 2025/2026 application. You can do this before having your place accepted by the university. If you need to change/cancel the application, you can do later.

Thanks,
Claire
