RE: Derby University (ACCESS Course)

Hi there. Thank you for reading.

I am a 29 year old Vulnerable adult with Autism.

I have several health conditions including severe ocd and learning disability.

Due to my current situation with my mental health and still being on an Antipsychotic tablet full time, I am unable to get out of the house before 11:30 am Every day currently due to my mental health.

Well the class for this course starts at 10AM.

The degree is at Derby Uni and I attended the experience Day this Sunday just gone.

I want to do The Artificial Intelligence with Data Science BSC Hons

However when I attended the Experience day with my 72 year old Father they told me that because I don't have A Levels/Or level 3 I have to do this course first.

It is this one :

Access Course
Foundation Pathways Programme

https://www.derby.ac.uk/undergraduate/access-courses/foundation-pathways/

Computing Pathway* - Academic Skills, Computing, Level 3 Maths and Information Technology

Entry requirements

For the Computing, Engineering, Science and Sports Pathways, GCSE Maths 9-4/A-C and GCSE English Language 9-4/A-C or Functional Skills Level 2 English are needed as a pre-requisite.

For all other Pathways, a literacy and numeracy assessment will take place at the Kedleston Road campus to check your suitability for the course if you do not already hold Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths.

My current Qualifications to date are a L2 BTEC DIPLOMA IN IT (QCF)) MERIT Grade and a (BTEC LV2 DIPLOMA MEDIA PRODUCTION) PASS Grade

However when I got home I did make an Application for the course and that was this Sunday 22nd February 2026.

What happens now, because their information and progression officer emailed yesterday to me and said this :

"

Hi

We have received your application for the Foundation Pathways Programme course.

However, before we can consider you further for this course you would need to provide the following to us:-

Please email me evidence of your GCSE Maths or if you are currently studying this at College, please let us know.

Once we receive this we can then relook at your application.

Kind Regards "

I emailed her as I had met her the experience day on Sunday 22nd February 2026.

I have spoken to her but in the past and only by email.

What do I do now?

I also have a Grade C at GCSE English and I have a Level 2 Functional Skills Maths Pass Grade and a Level 2 Functional Skills English Pass Grade

I informed her that I am taking the GCSE maths course now.

The course ends in June 2026 with the first paper 1 being on May 2026.

I am taking it as an Adult GCSE maths course at a Local community college in my town. I only have a grade D at GCSE maths and from 2015.

I am interests in taking AI and I want to pursue further advances in the AI Field on terms of education.

What are the best things for me to do now, and what are my options now?

She replied to me saying " Thanks "

Don't they usually normally offer you a Conditional offer now? As I haven't heard anything back from her, or them about the status of my application.

Thank you

I think that any offer only comes from completing a UCAS application not just saying "I am now doing this qualification and I am expected to earn 'X' grade"

I have Made an application under Apply and then " Apply directly to the University " Lucy was contacting me about my application I made to the University.

Specifically for the Foundation Pathway Programme, what happens now? I used Chatgpt for the Personal Statement for my course and attached it as a PDF.

Do you have any advice going forward? And if so, what is your recommended?

Also I am doing the Adult GCSE maths course. The course ends in June 2026 but the first paper is on 14th May 2026.

What do you recommend I do. To pass that? With a Grade 4 / a grade C or higher?

And, what do yourecommendations?

Do as many practise papers between now and then as you possibly can. They are enormously helpful.
I would contact UCAS directly and ask if they have heard from the university.

I think you should start some sort of practice now if you haven't finished all the content start with topic questions on pmt or math genie and then slowly transition into past papers, the more past papers and practice the better, I feel like starting in easter with past papers may be a bit too late if you are struggling atm so I would recommend as soon as you finish the content

The offers are when you have a complete UCAS application.

In terms of revising for your GCSE Foundation Mathematics, do as many past papers as possible. That is, in my opinion, the best thing you can do for yourself. There is not much otherwise. Do make sure you can do each topic thoroughly.

You can find past papers for free on Physics and Maths Tutor.

Do them whilst timed so you can become confident with the time limits you'll have during the real examination.

Best of luck ❣️

WIll they accept your Functional Maths instead of a GCSE Maths?

I would register free on https://www.drfrost.org/students

Once you are signed up you can find AQA GCSE Foundation resources to practise.

If you don't like that website then there's this: https://mmerevise.co.uk/gcse-maths-revision/ [don't buy anything just use the free stuff]

Hi, I am not qualify to give advice since I don't have the relevant information, the best is to contact the university and perhaps the career advisor at the college you are currently attending. I wish you all the best for.your future

One more thing, you could contact the person who made the request again, to ask what is the next step...

As I understand it you are studying GCSE Maths now, so as long as they're aware you're retaking it currently then they can consider making a conditional offer (one of the conditions will be to achieve the specified grade in GCSE Maths presumably). Bear in mind unis have up until May to make offers so I wouldn't worry if you haven't heard back yet :h:

In the meantime while you are waiting on a response from the uni, it's good to keep in mind data science and AI are very mathematical fields and you'll need to use maths a lot on a course in that area and working in it. So make sure you are very comfortable with the topics you are studying in your GCSE Maths and if you have any difficulties I'd encourage you to speak with your teacher and see what help they can provide on any particularly hard topics for you

Yes, do you have any advice to pass my current course with a Decent grade? Keep in mind, it is Foundation tier, and Foundation tier is capped at Grade 5.

The course ends in June 2026, but the first Paper is Paper 1 on 14th may.

Do you have any advice for me to pass this course, and good resources I can Use?

Next week, I have to meet with a Disability advisor from Derby Uni, to Discuss about my Support plan.

I also have DM you stuff you may find relevant to helping me.

Is it good that I passed the Level 2 Functional Skills Maths in 2025? (PASS) Grade.

Thank you.

It's been a long time since I did my maths GCSE so I probably can't help too much - I found Khan academy sometimes helpful but it's very US focused which might be less useful for the GCSE course!

As someone mentioned above in general doing practice problems often (and then building up to doing practice papers) is key for actually practicing the topics and getting used to applying the formulae and so on. For actually learning the material your best bet is probably to check with your teacher what they recommend as they'll know what the most up to date things you can use to help study and revise are
