Mature student (24) — Surrey vs Leicester vs Essex for Accounting & Finance (Foundati

Hey everyone, looking for some honest advice because I’m stuck.

I’m 24 and applying to go back to study Accounting & Finance after doing pretty badly in my A-levels when I was younger (just wasn’t focused at the time). I’ve now got offers for a foundation year at:

University of Surrey

University of Leicester

University of Essex

I’m also waiting to hear back from University of York, but that would be without a foundation year (so direct entry if I even get in).

Leanings Towards surrey but im

not 100% sure.

Hello!

Firstly, I would really recommend going to an Offer Holder Day for all of the universities. Being able to come onto campus, speak to staff and current students as well as seeing what else the university has to offer (e.g. societies, mature student spaces etc.) can help you to decide. The last in-person one at the University of Leicester is on 25th April and there is a digital one taking place on 29th April. Additionally, if you want to get the perspective of a mature student, we have some of who you can chat to on a virtual platform by clicking this link .

Secondly, I suggest comparing the different modules at each university. This will help you to see if you find the content taught in one university more interesting than another. For a course such as Accounting & Finance, the content might be quite similar amongst different universities but the way it is assessed/taught may differ.

Thirdly, a thing to note with studying at the University of Leicester is that graduates receive exemptions (depending on modules taken and grades received) from several exams that you would have to do if you went onto become a chartered accountant. My friend graduated last year and amongst the cohort of the accountancy firm he has joined, he has had to do less exams than other graduates due to the exemptions he received at Leicester. Overall, it can accelerate the journey to qualification.

I hope this has been a useful response!
