Anyone who studied in England but moved to Scotland?

I need help please, anyone from England whose currently studying in Scotland especially in Glasgow?

So I'm in sixth form studying A level computer science, graphics, history and core maths. Honestly I'm great at history but I regret picking it and wanted to pick biology instead.
So uh the problem here is that I'm in my first year of sixth form and about to finish core maths so my real exam for core maths is on may. I will finish my first year in England but then in the summer I'm moving to Scotland for family reasons. I did do my research but theirs as much as I could, from what I saw they usually do 5 subjects? And their called Sqa.

I did do combine science in highschool and got two grade 5, a grade 5 in maths, history and English literature and language are 7. Spanish and Art 4.

So I don't really have a problem doing 5 subjects and already decided what to pick.

1. Advance Computer Science (I'm currently studying this in OCR right know)
2. Advance Graphics (Currently studying this as well)
3. Higher Biology
4. Higher Chemistry
5. Higher Physics

I would have already have my results for core maths by then. From what I got is Advance is similar to A levels and Higher is similar to AS so similar to core maths? That also means I will start S6 in Scotland so would unis their be fine with higher? Like I don't understand what I'm doing. I know I'm moving their, idk when but afyer I complete my first year here so like what am I supposed to do? I have a certificate level in BSL, as I paid to take part in a club is that needed? From what I seen Scotland doesn't have colleges and Idk how people are in Glasgow.
I know that's like one of the nicest places but you get students? Idk how am I supposed to handle any of this. I need help tips or someone to tell me what am I meant to do?

Yes, I actually moved to Glasgow from England at maybe the start of year 10? and I'll hopefully start uni in September!! Rn I'm studying adv highers in bio chem and maths. Unlike England, there's only one exam board here called SQA so that may simplify things a bit.

I think Scotland is kind of funny in terms of how they've arranged their entire education system, but it's really not that bad. You probably won't be able to 100% decide on your subjects until you've actually started at school or college due to spacing issues and whether they even offer specific subjects or not.
My school for example offered higher computing science which I took in S5 last year, but they don't offer the adv higher course for it. On top of that, they didn't let me pick three sciences last year due to timetabling and column issues yada yada yada so I could only do bio and chem :frown:(
Most schools in S4 usually allow a maximum of 7 subjects (national 5s and national 4s),
and 5 subjects in each S5 and S6 - though more can be allowed for passionate students sometimes lol

Universities are usually happy with highers i think, it really just depends on the university and the course. Medicine for example will definitely require you to take some advanced highers (usually two if you're applying to a Scottish uni) so I'd say investigate your preferred universities and courses before you pick your subjects because it really will matter. One annoying thing to note is that the websites for quite a few unis make it quite difficult to find the scottish qualification equivalents in terms of entry requirements, you'd need to muck about a bit or even just email and ask directly if they're nowhere to be seen :// English universities especially are kind of dumb in my opinion when it comes to appropriate offers in terms of highers or advanced highers, ridiculous requirements like AAB when universities here ask for more sigma (mb I had to) requirements like BB or BC🫨

I think I should also clarify, I'm aware that in England people usually either go to sixth form or go to college for AS and A levels, over here sixth form is just the equivalent of staying in school and completing your highers and/or advanced highers within the school as a senior, or just going to college ofc but I personally feel like colleges have more variety in terms of subjects but the school environment is somewhat easier to handle and it certainly offers the core subjects. I know people who are in school but go to college or even to other schools for some courses that may not be offered (I have a friend who goes to another school to study adv english) but then again, that's something you'd only find out and sort once you're actually here

I read somewhere before I moved that Scottish people are usually quite friendly etc, no comment on that (no fears please it's not that bad trust just the accents take time getting used to), you'll certainly find your people one way or another 😅

If you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Thanks alot for the information.

Honestly I am very excited to start Glasgow but glad I get to finish my first year in sixth form. From what I understood they usually do 4 to 5 subjects and highers are like AS which means that I would have already have had core maths AS before starting in Glasgow. So higher maths is either way out of the option as my skills are memorising and retaining key informations and writing facts which is not great or best for maths.

As I would be 17 when I start in Glasgow they would most likely put me in S6, I was very shocked at first when I found at 11 and 18 year olds in the same building is definitely chaotic but I'm on the for the ride. Theirs no way I'm doing history again and as what I found out they do five subjects; I would definitely continue with computer science and graphics hopefully advance as I am already studying them.

I did do some of my research and it said it's something called 'crash course' when so the other 3 courses I would hopefully hope that my school would allow me to do 3 science as I would always pick physics over maths, actually any science over maths is a win for me. Honestly I am excited to start S6 their and would probably have to catch up on alot of the stuff which honestly I can do it. I wanted to pursue cyber security and VFX artist herein england but going to Scotland makes me believe I have a chance of instead pursuing to become a surgeon. Lol it was and still is my childhood dream so yeah.

Idk how it would or how I have to catch up to everything but I'm here for the work as long as it pays off and do hope to make some friends their. Some of my classmates when I asked them about Glasgow education said it's weak, it definitely seemed bias so yeah lol. Very thanks for your comment and the help. If you want do you want to be friends?

That's kind of how I think about it as well, highers are basically just as-level because they're done at similar ages but the more you think about it the more complicated it becomes and they're not really the same in the end so better not to dwell on it ) .
I felt like when I moved, national 5s were easier than GCSEs so I did quite well in them. I ended up underestimating the higher courses because they're definitely a big jump from national 5s , and advanced highers even more so.
Maths might still be something useful to do (higher i mean, us adv higher maths ppl are a bit insane lol) but if you've already done AS-level then it should be fine I think, but double check once you start here. In the beginning you'll certainly have the chance to play about with your subjects, picking more or dropping others so you understand what's needed of them and whether you like them or not and can manage the workload etc. Tbh I quite like memorising sort of subjects too like biology it's just so much easier 🥹 but I really do enjoy maths now because there's no silly tricks involved like in chemistry for example where a rule might not apply in every situation so you have to learn exceptions and it's very tiring, maths might be tricky to understand at first but the only thing you need for that subject is practice and nothing else!

Yes, I felt like when I first started I didn't mind the younger students but now in s6 I realise how older we've all become and the small ones are getting crazier by the day oml 😭🙏 it can definitely be frustrating sometimes having to share the building with them because some of them have no respect at all, they can be quite rude - and funny - but it's certainly not a big problem and you may or may not get used to it. It'll only be for a year though so enjoy the noise while it lasts!

Crashing is something that I think is really good to be honest, even though I didn't crash any subjects myself but it's definitely useful especially if you decide against a career or just want to try something new, and it's not uncommon here either.

Hopefully they allow you to do three sciences, in s4 I did three sciences; I would go to my bio and chem classes and I learnt physics myself purely because I love the subject and the timetables didn't allow it (biology and physics were on at the same time). I think there's someone else in my school now who did the same but is also studying the three sciences at higher level (obviously one science off-timetable) which I didn't do because it was eating too much time and I'd have risked all my grades and everyone advised me against it and for some reason I listened (regrets) 🤪. But if you really really want to, beg for it!!

S6, i was looking forward to it honestly but it seems so much worse than s5 😅 because of having to do things outside of school like the UCAT, interviews, experiences etc etc etc.
Advanced biology and chem (and maybe other subjects too though I'm not entirely sure) have components called projects which you could say is kind of like an EPQ that's integrated into the subject itself rather than being its own separate qualification? They're worth quite a chunk of the overall grade and they take up a lot of time too compared to the assignments of highers, which is another reason s5 was better :// the good thing abt s6 tho is that if you pick less than 5 subjects you get free periods 🍃

becoming a surgeon is quite an aspiration, honestly I'm not planning to be a surgeon myself at the moment i'll decide later on 🥹 I hope you manage to achieve your dreams in that regard then, make sure to study smart and get good grades!!
np, and yes why not 🥳

Yeah, thanks alot ❤️

I'm in the middle of picking, cyber security, surgeon ora vfx artist and I will probably beg them to let me study 3 science. I definitely have good speaking skills it often came handy as I took various leadership roles in high school.

Can you recommend me some schools in Glasgow, I want to be prepared before I move their. Honestly idk how I feel about going back to school wearing school uniform when I found out their wear uniform well atleasg I would be stuck with it for an year atleast. 🙃 how are timetables usually arrange in S6? If you don't have lessons do you go home or stay there? Honestly I'm more right know probably afraid of my future teachers.

I'm probably worried about if their have a computer nea project as here their do and I almost completed my analysis and would start start design so if they have something similar I would probably have to transfer all my work their just pray that it works out.

For me maths is alright but I hate how the questions are usually worded and how you have to work stuff out, I prefer writing explanations. I did do higher maths but me and maths never got well along unlike me and physics. Also if highers are AS my core Core maths is also AS so technically would my core maths count as a higher maths as both are AS? Yeah I have no idea.

I don't actually know much abt the schools tbh 😅 the school you will go depends on where you end up living, but I think with colleges it might not matter as much. And I don't actually mind school uniform, it also depends on the school ig some schools are more stricter than others!
Every school will have a different timetabling system so theres a bunch of columns and you have to pick one subject from each column which means if there's two subjects that you wish to do and they're both in the same column you can only pick one of them (pain) whenever I don't have classes I either just sit in the school library or I'd go home and have a walk about, whatever you wish to do you can do it )

Physics really is just special tbh 🌸
I'm not too sure abt the higher maths and core maths bit either tbh you'll have to ask

All what you explained reminds me of high school, idk how to feel going back to school just for 2 years of education but hey it would be worth it then uni
