Medicine work experience

I am currently a year 12 student aspiring to study medicine. I wanted to ask does anyone know where I can get work experience and how. Also, Can I ask where you got work experience just for examples of what work experience I can do?

Hi @jk4,

It's great to hear that you are interested in studying medicine and are planning ahead. Experience might be work shadowing in a hospital, hospice or GP surgery but could also be time assisting in a care home or other care organisation.

It’s good to see what being a healthcare professional is really about. If you’ve tried applying for work experience and just cannot get any, then don’t worry. Think about doing some voluntary work or some community related work.

If you wish to familiarise yourself with the application process with us click here. If you do have any questions about work experience or the application process, please get in touch with us via [email protected]

Hope this helps even a little bit,

Hey @jk4

It's great that you're already thinking about work experience! Shadowing is great work experience, so speak to your local hospital, GP practices, etc. St Johns ambulance service or volunteering at a local care home are great ways to get some experience.
If you're unable to get shadowing experience, there are some options for virtual work experience -> https://medicmentor.org/university-hospitals-birmingham-trust-virtual-work-experience/
Here's a link for some more info on GP work experience: https://www.rcgp.org.uk/your-career/work-experience

Also, have a look at MOOCs as an extracurricular alongside work experience.

Hope this helps

Hi,
Sorry for the late reply I have been busy with exams and my EPQ.
Yes I am volunteering at a NHS hospital.
However, in terms of actual shadowing I don't know what website or through what I should apply. Do you have any links I can use to apply for theses work experiences to shadow doctors?
Thank you for your help!

Hiya,

There are very few opportunities unfortunately with directly shadowing due to issues with insurance, liability and your safety. There are a few in-person univeristy programmes you could do if your city provides this but these are rare (this is what I did) and they are usually for contextual applicants.
However, I do know a friend who applied for dentistry and emailed and called literally every single dentist in our city and asked and managed to get one to say yes so honestly you could try this.

Hope this helps

I did mine in an eye clinic at a hospital. I wasn't working with doctors, I was shadowing an optician and I found that it wasn't a detriment. The experience was still really valuable because I tried to find a learning lesson in every interaction. For example: the way the optician would explain and discuss potential treatments, how they would comfort patients with a difficult prognosis and how they would handle argumentative patients. If you focus on as many details as you can, you will end up with a lot of insights. My experience was only two days and I had written approximately 3 pages in notes by the end of it. And finally, don't be afraid to ask questions to the health care worker you are shadowing. I gained a lot of insights that way too.
