College allocation at Cambridge

Hello, I have received a conditional offer from Cambridge to do an MPhil. I have just logged onto the self-service portal and saw that I was unsuccessful at my first preference college. I know that it will now go to my second preference, but what will happen if I am unsuccessful there?

Will I be pooled? Am I guaranteed a place at one of the colleges now that I have received an offer, or is it still possible that I could be rejected by all of them and not be able to go?

Hi, congrats on your offer! Every student at Cambridge (whether undergraduate or postgraduate) definitely gets allotted to a college. So if you get rejected by your second choice, you will be pooled and get a different college based on availability so it shouldn't have any effect on your offer.

Hey, what were your first and second choice colleges? And how long after receiving your offer did your college decision come through?

Cambridge has to allocate everyone a college, you will be considered by the other colleges and one of them WILL take you!

I have received my offer, just wondering how quickly it took for people to be rejected from Trinity? I put it as my first choice with full expectation that I will not get into that one 🤣

Hey, my preferences were Pembroke and Newnham. It was nearly a week after i got my offer that I was rejected by Pembroke and a few more days after that when I heard about Newnham. Thank you, I needed to hear that. I just am tired of waiting now.

Thank you very much. I wasn't sure if I could still get rejected and not be able to go. Its nice to know that is not the case.

Does the self service portal tell you you've been unsuccessful or do you stay on seeking college membership until you get allocated? I've been on seeking college membership for over 2 weeks

It told me when I was unsuccessful at Trinity last week and updated today to say I’d been accepted at Queens! So yes it should update 😊 best of luck with your choices

Weirdly I haven’t seen that I was unsuccessful at Trinity (also my first choice) but I see in the portal that I was unsuccessful at my second choice. I haven’t gotten any email communications either. Did your portal specifically say denied at Trinity? Not sure how to interpret it.

Yes my portal specifically said ‘unsuccessful at Trinity’ then 2/3 days later it said ‘accepted at Queens’. Im not sure if it depends on the admin/college updating the system.

Yeah that’s right I didn’t get an email, I just checked the portal and it said it. Read ‘Unsuccessful at Trinity, seeking college membership’ Then it went to to accepted at Queen's (my second choice)

Just saw the same in my portal about Trinity ☹️ when did you hear back about Queens?
Also, does anyone know if this mean I'm also unsuccessful in securing Trinity funding?

I heard back from Queens really quick, about two working days later! I don’t know if this is normal or not, but I know I’ve been nominated for funding as I asked my faculty.

Yeah I’ve been stuck on waiting to hear back from Trinity since the beginning of February as well. It’s been well over 4 weeks and not a peep. I wonder if we should contact PAO?

I have the same question!

Was unfortch unsuccessful at my two top choices (Trinity and Magdalene). Wishing now that I had put Magdalene as my top choice, since they have a scholarship for which I fit a specific profile (nationality and degree level).

The order of preference was just due to the fact that Trinity had funding for my specific degree, but it would’ve obvs been silly to put Trinity down as a second choice.

I assume my rejection means I am no longer going to be considered for the Magdalene scholarship, but was wondering if someone could confirm?
