Hi there,

You may be eligible to volunteer with the Police Dogs department, who can work with dogs, provided you are close to turning 18 at the time of application. You can find more information about this role and its eligibility criteria by clicking here.

I’ve also looked into other volunteering opportunities available to individuals aged 17. While options in specialist canine training are limited at this age, volunteering with the RSPCA could be a great alternative. Although the training aspect may not be as in-depth, it would demonstrate your commitment to working with dogs and allow you to develop valuable, transferable skills that are highly relevant to a future role in canine training. You can read more about their volunteering opportunities here.

I hope this helps:smile:

Hey x

Canine training is competitive, and the fact you're thinking of gaining experience at 17 already puts you ahead.

With you being 17 skill is not really the issue when gaining experience, it's insurance and liability laws. Most shelters and training facilities can't take under 18s without specific coverage. I'd suggest instead of searching for loopholes, which can backfire, look for alternative ways to build relevant experience that will still count towards applications.

An independent dog trainer may be able to offer some experience within shadowing, observe group classes and helping setup/down classes.

Dog walking and sitting is also a great way to gain informal experience or any dog day care/kennels may offer some experience as well. This counts towards animal handling experience; cleaning kennels, assist during feeding...

Additionally, voluntary roles are available for Under-18s, such as The Blue Cross or the The Cinnamon Trust often allow younger volunteers within fundraising, admin and events. Yes this is not direct training, it shows commitment to animal welfare.

Online courses within Canine Behaviour can also enhance your application, and shows initiative.

I hope this helps 😃
