Four Unions, One Community - How Student Life Really Works at UofG

One thing that makes the University of Glasgow very different from most other unis is that we don’t just have 'A' student union rather we have four separate student bodies that each do something slightly different: GUU, QMU, GUSA and the SRC. When I applied, I had no idea how this worked, but as a 3rd year Business and Management student, I’ve realised it’s a big part of what makes the community here feel so strong.

Glasgow University Union (GUU)
GUU is the more traditional union, with a long history of debating, big social events and that classic old-union atmosphere. It’s great if you like things like debates, competitions, bigger club nights and that old Glasgow feel. A lot of people see it as the home of big events and long-standing traditions on campus.

Queen Margaret Union (QMU)
QMU has a different vibe - a more music, arts and a slightly more relaxed, creative atmosphere. It’s known for live gigs, open mics and a more informal feel. If you’re into bands, smaller events or just want a more chilled union space, you’ll probably find yourself here quite a lot.

Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA)
If you’re into sport at any level, from serious competitive teams to completely casual beginners, GUSA is where you’ll end up. They look after the sports clubs, from football and rowing to things like ultimate frisbee, and they’re a big part of the health and fitness side of student life. Even if you’re not sporty, it’s a good way to meet people and try something new.

Students’ Representative Council (SRC)
The SRC is all about representation and support. They’re the official voice of students to the University, and they organise class reps, campaigns, advice services and a lot of the practical side of student welfare. If you ever need help with academic issues, housing questions, or just general support, they’re usually the first port of call.

The nice thing is that you don’t have to choose just one, you naturally end up using all four in different ways. Together, they cover almost every side of student life: social, creative, sporting and academic support. It’s a structure that’s quite specific to Glasgow, and it means there’s usually someone, somewhere, working on the things that matter to you as a student.

A great resource to know more about the clubs and societies is: https://link.unibuddy.co/unibuddy/DjKWbfspysTjK5Kn7
You can also go the main uni page for them: https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/clubs/

The question is - If you imagine yourself at UofG, which one do you think you’d gravitate towards first - the social side (GUU/QMU), sport (GUSA), or representation and support (SRC)?

Otherwise, you will find out once you join us
Thank you!
