What job did you do?
At my camp this summer I was getting paid $300 a week for 8 weeks and a $500 bonus, with free food and shelter at camp... most people said that was above expectations for summer work and I spent all that money easily travelling.

hiya, iw orked on a campground where people jusat went camping in Cape Cod and also got a job waitressing, had free accomodation. i got a job out of the directory and it was the tim eof my life so far, ive already been back to visit!!! i earned a lot more because i got a second job but most jobs in the directory give you $7-$10 an hour. i worked for 2 months and travlled for amonth and earned like $7000. spent most of it but managed to ocme home with quite a bit. any more questions just ask i really want people to have the summer of a lifetime. How did you find the visa process and doing th SEVIS thing. Also did u have to set up a bank account in america for pay cheque ?

Reply 122

the visa process would have been easier if i applied earlier but its my own fault for applying soo late on. with regards to all the documents there wasnt a problem, BUNAC helped with everything and make sure all your documents are sorted for you. i called so many times when i was doing mine (again cus of the lateness). it was just booking an embassy appointment because they get filled quite quickly. i went to belfast for mine - £10 return flight was cheaper then going to london. Sevis wasnt a problem either.

Yes to the bank account thing, my employers told me about the banks when i got there and all the people i was working with had already set one up so it was really simple from what i remember. i got paid every 2 weeks from my job and then tips in my waitressing job.

Are you legit, I'm only asking because as much as I research this work america program on the t'internet, the responses I find are always too good to be true... I mean free accomodation? What's the catch?

I've been struggling to find what jobs are offered through the directory, looking at possibly getting a job as a croupier in Las Vegas or a merchandiser in Universal CA, but I don't know how possible this is and what route to go through?!

On facebook for the work america pages, most people are calculating arranging costs of over £1000.... is that serious?!

Hey!

Is this the BUNAC work america program?

I think 7000 grand seem a wee bit too good to be true lol but yeah wages are normally 7-10 and free accomodation is quite common. A lot of companies give free accomodation - especially hotels etc and if they dont they normally offer discounted on site accomodation. You need to pay for insurance (138ish) visa (101) and flights (500ish) put you will also need spending money to take over with you. But you get all your wages when you are over there! I went to a work america bunac presentation last week this is why i know  You should check the presentations out - they are going around all the unis at the moment! REally helpful - people giving presentation are those who have done it in the past so they have some useful hints and tips.

Have you applied through BUNAC yet? I think i am going to do summer camp again although work america does look fantastic

Anyway any questions jst ask!

How bound to the job are you ? For example can I work a few weeks then just go off travelling. Is it easy and cheap to travel some vast distacne across America. I want to go in June do you think if I applied in the next month I could get the VISA and everything sorted for then.

Not found a job but thinking I may risk it! If there's a good job in the job directory somewhere else then I'll apply for that of course

I really want to do work america but am worried about costs. I know that the registration is 246 or something but do you then have to buy the package on top of this? so it's 446 plus the 246?

The basic cost is

Bunac Registartion fee £239
Travel insurance £138
US SEVIS £25
VISA £101

Total - £503

All that is mandatory

You have to take £600 if u are job hunting over there or £360 if u have one pre aranged.

Flight package which is optional is £449

hope this helps

No, not really, you might be on the same flight as someone doing work america for 6 hours, but the chances you'll sit next to them or even see them again is minimal. There are no real incenitives towards it.

You do get a night in NY included, but for a tiny bit more I can buy a flight to San Francisco so I'm just doing that

Has anyone heard of the yummy jobs work america type thing? it's not the working at Disney world one but the other one, where you get to work at a hotel/resort in the US because i'm thinking of applying to do that programme but I can't seem to find anyone else who knows about it or who has done it.
