York or Cardiff for medicine?

I have offers for both but am stuck between which one to firm.
is anyone able to tell me about the social sides of either place or their opinions on the which to choice?
i really like both places and curriculums so i feel my decision would be down to the social side of it but im not sure which would best suit me?

Hey! I’m a student at the University of York (not doing medicine), but I can share what the social side is like here 😊

Honestly, one of the best things about York is how easy it is to settle in and meet people. The college system really helps with that; you’re put into a smaller community early on, so you’re not just thrown into a huge uni and left to figure everything out yourself. There are always college events, sports, and socials going on, especially in first year.

In terms of general social life, there’s quite a lot to do but it’s not overwhelming. There are loads of societies and sports clubs, so it’s pretty easy to find people with similar interests. The campus itself is also really social; you end up bumping into people all the time, whether it’s at cafés, study spaces, or just walking around the lake.

The city is quite small compared to Cardiff, which can be a pro or con depending on what you want. York is really pretty and feels safe, and everything is close together, which I personally like. Nights out are fun but a bit more chill as it’s not a huge clubbing city, but there’s definitely still a social scene.

Accommodation-wise, most first years live on campus or really close, which makes a big difference socially. You’re near your friends, near your lectures, and it just makes everything feel more connected. Plus your college is tied to your accommodation, so that’s another way you meet people.

I guess overall:

York is more close-knit and campus-based

Cardiff is more of a bigger, busier city vibe

So it kind of depends on what you prefer day-to-day. If you like the idea of a more community feel where everything’s nearby, York’s great. If you want a bigger city with more going on, Cardiff might suit you more.
Either way, both are really good options 🙂
