Future SOAS London Int. Student Inquiry

Hi, can anyone from SOAS who's currently taking or knows somebody taking Film Studies and International Relations please tell me what it's like and if you get the opportunity to join others in a similar field in going to film festivals etc as well and if you practicals with the camera, making sound effects etc in general?? There's not a lot of info or comments about this and I'm really interested as an undergrad. Please answer soon before May, thank you!!

Hi there,
I am currently an International Relations and Law student and I can say that on the IR side it is very much based on learning theory in the first year and then applying those in different contexts in your second and third year. This includes sectors like religion, different discourses like law and postcolonial theories. I have quite enjoyed the IR side of my course, sometimes more so than law, because I have gotten the chance to study very niche modules and learn from lecturers and tutorial leaders who have been in the field. For film studies, I don't have much to say about it from experience. However, our website breaks it down pretty well. You are offered experiences within the industry where you can volunteer at film festivals. You also have the opportunity to develop practical skills in film curating. I appreciate that hearing from a student about their experience makes all the difference but the academics in this field may be able to clear some of your doubts. You can get the contact information for the Film Studies academic here. They will be able to clarify what practical experience you get within this degree as well as any other exciting opportunities.

Hope this has helped,
Sarah:smile:
