What uni for civil engineering?

Hi,
I have received 5 unconditional for Civil Engineering BEng Hons starting Sept. 2026:
Aberdeen
Glasgow
Heriot-Watt
Edinburgh
Strathclyde
I thought that I wanted to go to Strathclyde, but I don't know much about the university compared to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Could someone give some advice on what university I should choose?

I would look at which uni is known for their civil engineering course. I am planning on doing civil in aberdeen this year, I know a guy doing mechanical engineering whos in 2nd yr now and he said the civil engineering lecturers are good, so im not too worried about it. Worse case pass first year and go to a different uni for 2nd yr.

Hi, this is the University of Aberdeen rep account. Congratulations on all of your unconditional offers! That's a great place to be sitting at this point. I just thought I'd come in with some thoughts which might be helpful when weighing up these universities.

I would recommend having a look around this site for students of each of the unis you have offers from to see what the general consensus is. There might even be threads for Engineering students from those universities that you could ask questions in.
It's also worth thinking about the cities and what appeals to you. Do you want to be close to or far away from home, do you want to be in a big or small city, are there things/places in that city that you're interested in or will be good for any hobbies you have; those sorts of factors should definitely be on your mind as well as the actual courses of each of the universities.
Then it would be worth having a look on each of our websites to see what appeals to you about the courses eg. course content, projects you will get to do through your degree, prospects upon graduation, that sort of thing. If you're wanting more details about Strathclyde it could be worth reaching out to them to see if they can answer any questions you have. We also offer the opportunity to talk to some of our current staff and students through Unibuddy here: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/study/student-life/chat/
And other universities might have similar services available.

I hope this information has been useful and all the best with coming to a decision! You've got plenty of time still to weigh everything up.

Hi there,

I'm currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow, and have really enjoyed my time here so far. I have friends in different disciplines including civil, and although it's hard work, people are generally pretty positive about the course.

For me, the most important part of choosing a university is the non-academic parts. Which city would you prefer to live in? What area is the university based in? Is there sports clubs or societies which cater to your interest? How's the student night life?

My 3 years at Glasgow have been incredible thanks to the busy student unions, sports clubs, campus atmosphere and surrounding area. Living in the west end has so much to offer, and the wider city is full of activities, live music, green spaces and more.

Any specific questions about Glasgow let me know, and best of luck with your decisions. Only you will know where is best for you!

All the best,
Elise, Student Rep

Hey Anon! Sorry for the delay in my reply 🙂
We'll be running offer holder events over the next month if you'd like the chance to come and see the campus? We had our first one at the weekend and have another later on in April. We're also running a virtual event. Your faculty should have sent you the details for these! They can be a good way to help you feel like you know the campus and course better!

Massive congrats on your offers - that's such a good position to be in and you'll have worked hard for them 😀
