accommodation at universiy of york

hi guys!! i’m currently a yr13 who has an offer to study midwifery at the university of york, while i’ve visited a few times with my college so i know it’s a good university for me, however i hadn’t been able to go to the open day so im not sure which accommodation is the best? is anyone currently studying at university of york or doing midwifery or have any advice how to choose the accommodation right for me? for midwifery i know that choosing an accommodation with the right people and the right facilities (e.g. a car park) is needed but im not too sure how to research into this, anything will help at this point thank you!!!

Im sure you've already checked this, but the uni of york does a good walk through of their different colleges (accommodations) on their website, as well as a map, so you can see all their positions and near by amenities. They also have a table denoting different price points for each type of room in each college

Hi I know that Goodricke, Langwith and David Kato are really good, personally David Kato is amazing! Alongside this, parking is really good however you need to have a specific criteria to park in the campus - young carer and/or disability and you need to prove it.

Hi @alexismarl

Congratulations on your offer to study at York! 🎉

As @The Goblin King said, we have some videos showing our different colleges (Colleges on Campus West and Colleges on Campus East), and we have a playlist of accommodation tours on YouTube as well. Watching these will give you an idea of what each College and their accommodation are like.

I think there are a few factors to consider when choosing your accommodation:

1. Catered or self-catered?
In your first year, you'll be on placement some weeks, so self-catered accommodation would probably be better for you so that you can prepare your meals flexibly around your placement commitments.

All our colleges on Campus East are self-catered, and Alcuin College, Derwent College and Halifax College on Campus West are self-catered too.

2. Ensuite or shared bathroom?
This is personal preference really, but here are some things to note:

Shared bathroom accommodation is often cheaper than ensuite.

If you have an ensuite, it's your responsibility to clean it, provide the cleaning products to clean it and provide the toilet roll.

If you have a shared bathroom, toilet roll is provided, and the bathrooms are cleaned regularly by cleaners.

If you have a shared bathroom, you'll have a private washbasin in your room too.

3. Location on campus: proximity to your classes and to parking
Midwifery is part of the Department of Health Sciences, which is on Campus West, so your teaching is likely to be based here. If you want to be within walking distance, you'll probably want to live on Campus West. However, it's totally feasible to live on Campus East and have classes on Campus West. It's easy to get between the two campuses by:

Walking - takes ~25 minutes

Cycling - takes ~10 to 15 minutes

Bus - the U1 and U2 both run from Campus East into the city centre via Campus West - it's free for students between Campus East and Campus West. The journey takes around 5 to 10 minutes.

We have car parks on both Campus West and Campus East, check out our website to see exactly where these are. It's worth noting that you'll need to apply for a student permit, but as a Health Sciences student you are eligible to apply.

You might have been invited to a Visit Day for Offer Holders as well. These are a great opportunity to not only explore your Department and sample teaching at York, but to explore our campus and view some accommodation. If you have the chance to come to a Visit Day for Offer Holders, I'd definitely recommend it 😀 .

I hope this helps!
Hannah 😀

To be honest with you, your choices don't necessarily matter too much as your accommodation will ultimately be randomly allocated based on your ranked choices. However, since you're doing midwifery (I'm assuming this is on campus west) I'd probably recommend Alcuin since that's pretty close by. If you don't mind not being close to your department, then Anne Lister and David Kato are also pretty nice and fairly affordable. I also lived in Goodricke for a while, which I found fine (just didn't like sharing a bathroom, nor did I like my flatmates). Just make sure you'd be fine with recieving any one of your choices.
