A-level Mathematics/Pure Mathematics

So back in January I got conditional offers from Imperial, UCL, Edinburgh, and Manchester (yay!). They all gave me more or less the same conditions: AAA (A*AA for Imperial) in Biology, Chemistry, and Maths. I'm a private candidate and I don't attend a school with any A-level curricula, so I've been studying these subjects on my own.

Since I'm planning to take Pearson Edexcel's IALs, I was wondering if I could meet my Maths requirement with Pure Mathematics? Or does the A or above in Maths need to be fulfilled with Mathematics?

I'm asking this because my country's British Council requires additional charges for the Mathematics optional modules and sitting exams is expensive af. Hence, I was thinking of taking Pure Mathematics because the Further Pure Mathematics modules don't have additional charges.

(profuse apologies if my understanding of the UK educational system is wrong)

Hi,

Congratulations on all your offers🥳🥳. Usually when an offer states “A in mathematics” it means it’s fulfilled with A-levels mathematics and not only pure mathematics. You can also drop the universities an email for clarification.

Hey - congratulations on all your offers!!! Definitely contact each university and ask them directly, I assume most will require the overall Mathematics A-level, but some may be lenient

For IALs I expect pure maths should suffice as it covers the same core content, it just means the optional modules you take are the FP modules.

Specifically, IAL Mathematics covers P1, P2, P3, P4 and some specified combination of applied options from M1/M2, S1/S2 or D1. IAL Pure Maths is P1, P2, P3, P4 and FP1 plus either FP2 or FP2.

Since both cover P1-4 I expect you should be fine. I agree with the above that to avoid any doubt, it's best contact unis to check however

Thanks everyone! I'll ask the universities for clarification then.
I'll be updating this thread in case anyone wants an experiment on the leniency of the Russell Group :P
