Medicine super curriculars help

Hello all!

I was wondering if anybody knew of any good extra curriculars for medicine? I want really impressive and niche things such as specific competitions, challenges, research programs or residential.

If anyone has gotten into a Russell group for medicine what extra curriculars (super curricular) did you do? And any other tips and advise is also welcome!

Thanks 🙏🏻

Hello, I've applied for medicine for 2026 entry, and this was my response for the second supercurriculars question on the PS:

My A-level Biology studies sparked my interest in disease prevention. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks fascinated me with how the unplanned and ethically controversial use of one patient's cells revolutionised vaccine research. I explored modern applications of such breakthroughs in a Christ Church 500th Anniversary Lecture, which highlighted the necessity of pandemic preparedness in an interconnected world. This inspired my Gold CREST project, exploring how pandemics have evolved and their implications for the future, leading me to devise a Lyme disease prevention strategy for Imperial College's Science in Medicine Prize.

During work experience, I was surprised that 142 in 100,000 hospital admissions were for mental health conditions. Building on this and my Psychology lessons, I explored the relationship between brain damage, dysfunction, and behaviour through The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat which excited me with the breadth of diverse neurological conditions. This and a visit to Museum of the Mind emphasised that patients are more than their symptoms, requiring both clinical accuracy and unconditional empathy.

My passion is also reflected in science competitions, including RSC Schools' Analyst Competition (2nd in school), British Biology Olympiad (Commended), and Chemistry Cambridge Challenge (Silver).

Try and link up your supercurriculars to show that there's a path of interest, so like because you were interested in this, you did this which led you to do this etc. Try not to get too stressed about your supercurriculars - most medical schools don't look at your PS, and I wasn't asked about what I wrote for any of my interviews. Good luck! - let me know if you have any questions.

Hiya,
Too be honest, most unis dont really read your ps. Only very few look at whether you have a bit of work experience. They only exception is Oxbridge. So no need to do things for the sake of your application as they dont care.
It sounds harsh but they almost always rank your UCAT and GCSEs (or A-levels for some). If you are in the top X%, you get invited to interview. Then you are usually just ranked by interview score then given offers.

Also, you really dont need to be looking specifically at Russell groups as for med it doesnt matter. Legally, all med schools need to be more or less the same so it is one of the few courses where it doesnt matter.

That being said, Im going to Exeter just bcs I loved the uni. To get some experience, I did a MOOC on medical statistics and inferential stats, work experience at a GP practice, did a medical school programme.

Hope this helps
