LSBU or Roehampton for Education

I’m currently studying in year 13 and have got places in both London South Bank and Roehampton for education / primary education. I’ve heard both positive and negative things about both of the universities and my main worry is how day to day life is as i’ll be moving there, i’ve visited both campuses and think the both of them definitely seem great. If I want to qualify as a teacher, studying at LSBU would mean an extra year and an extra course in order to qualify whereas at Roehampton, it’s all combined into one course.
Thanks(:

Hey there,

Firstly, well done on receiving both offers, that’s a great position to be in.

At London South Bank University, day to day life is very central and well connected. The campus is in Elephant and Castle, so everything is close by, transport, cafés, shops and part time job opportunities. The campus itself is compact, so it’s easy to settle in quickly. As a Primary Education student, your week would usually be a mix of lectures, seminars and school placements, so it feels practical and varied rather than just classroom based.

In terms of qualifying as a teacher, LSBU’s route can include completing your degree and then a PGCE year to gain Qualified Teacher Status. While it is an extra year, some students value having more time to build confidence, strengthen subject knowledge and feel fully prepared before stepping into teaching.

It really comes down to how you see your everyday life and which structure feels right for you. If you can picture yourself living and studying in central London with strong school placement links, LSBU could be a great fit.

You can chat with our current students on Unibuddy to hear their experiences and ask your questions directly (https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/student-life/chat).

Hi! 😊

Congratulations on getting both your offers! It’s honestly such a nice problem to have, choosing between two options.

I studied at Roehampton for four years and now work here, so I’ve experienced it properly as a student first, and I genuinely don't regret choosing it. For me, a big part of that was the day-to-day feel of the place. It’s very campus-based and close-knit, with everything in one spot, which makes settling in a lot easier if you’re moving away from home. You’ve still got London right there when you want it, but your everyday routine feels community-focused rather than overwhelming.

If you’re looking at Education, it’s also worth knowing Roehampton has over 180 years of history in the subject. Through Whitelands College, founded in 1841, education has always been at the heart of the University, so it’s one of the areas it’s really known for and has a lot of experience in.

And just on a practical note, if one route means an extra year and the other doesn’t, that’s definitely something to factor in. An extra year means extra tuition fees and living costs, so it’s worth weighing that up alongside everything else.

Both are good options, it really comes down to where you can picture yourself living and studying for the next few years. If you’ve got any specific questions about student life, accommodation or settling in, feel free to ask! 💚
