Speech and Language Therapy - is the MSc the same as the pre-reg?

I am looking at applying for the Speech and Language therapy at postgrad level.

I am aware that for Pre-Reg courses you get undergrad funding again due to the whole thing of these course (SLT, OT, radiography etc.) being classed as "in demand" professions.

However I am seeing a lot of Speech and Language MSc's that don't specify that they are pre-reg - does this mean that the funding would be different for them? Other than that is there any other difference I should know about between the pre-reg and the other Masters in Speech and Language Therapy? Thank you!

Hi! I can’t help as I am not too familiar with how it works but there’s a specific SLT 2026 thread where you could ask your question and I am sure you could get some great answers there!

SLT / lecturer here.

All 'speech and language therapy' courses are pre-registration. Some just don't mention it on their website which confuses students (and some historically used different names like speech and language sciences). The important detail is whether they are registered with the HCPC. If they are then you are eligible for the same funding as everyone else. You can check here:

Hi,

A pre-registration course is a course that will train you in accordance with the awarding body (in this case HCPC) for you to qualify by the end of your training. If it’s not a pre-registration course then it may be for already qualified speech and language therapists (check the entry requirements) or it does not meet the HCPC requirements for registration.
Overall, if you want to become an SLT then a pre-registration course accredited by the awarding body is the route you should go into.
