Moved to AS level

Please help me guys I was movrd to AS level for chemistry despite being told we had until the end of march for a test that would decide it. I have poured all my energy and time into chemsitry, lost sleep, cried, gotten sick, consistent migraines and have really bad mental health because of the strain from chemistry. I got all 5 offers from my universities and i have to make a decision by the 6th of may. Even a D at A level is worth more UCAS points than a B at AS level. Im really scared and sick to my stomach by this news. My dream (if anyone has read my posts before) has always been to get into royal holloway for psychology, cognitive and clinical neuroscience. I applied to Westminsters Cognitive and clinical neuroscience course too and it says i need 96 ucas points. I have an unconditional offer from roehampton for the same course as rhul but i really need rhul. Im probably catastophising this by a long shot but I really worked hard for that supposed end of march test just to get kicked in the shins by my teachers 😭 Please give me advice

Hi @kinzaaaaaaaaa,

I'm sorry to hear you are having a hard time with your A-levels currently.

Firstly, try to take a break and engage in some hobbies. It sounds like you have been working super hard and absolutely deserve some time off. This can help you refresh and think straight.

Next, have a meeting with your head of sixth form. Explain your situation and your aspirations and they may be able to alter you back onto the A-level course. This is your best chance to negotiate doing A-level chemistry.

Try to remember you still have an unconditional offer. So either way you can still head to university this year. If you are determined to just go rhul, then remember there are always other options. See if that course offers a foundation year, or you could take a gap year and resit your chemistry A-level. This is a completely normal thing to do as people enter university at various points in life. It can also be massively beneficial as you can use the year to gain experience.

Also focus on still trying to prove yourself in those exams at the end of march, it sounds like you got this!

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions 😊,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)

Hi, focus on your UCAS points:
Talk to your teachers/ advisors about your stress and ask how your AS grade will count
Protect your health: Aim for your best possible outcome in exams, don't fixate on what's already happened
You've gotten an unconditional offer which is great back up but create a study plan so you can achieve the needed grades for rhul.

Thank you for these responses! Im studying for a test that my teacher allowed me to take in order to prove my progress but its the entire spec and 2 hours long 😢 Ill try my best but if i end up permanently on AS level i just want to know if westminister would consider me for cognitive and clinical neuroscience? They gave me an offer for 96 UCAS points and its unspecified whether they take AS or not. Ive decided to be safe and to go for rhul for my masters, and put my unconditional offer as my insurance and maybe westminister as my firm if the AS isnt an issue. This way I would be able to focus on my other two a levels and get better grades in those too instead of burning out over chemistry 😢😢😢

Hi @kinzaaaaaaaaa,

We're sorry to hear about your situation, and it’s completely understandable that you’re feeling anxious and frustrated after putting so much effort in.

We'd really encourage you to reach out to your head of sixth form or exams officer to clarify why the decision was made early and whether there’s any possibility of review or appeal, especially since you were told you’d have until the end of March. It might also help to explain how this change could affect your university offers and UCAS points.

Since Royal Holloway is your dream university, it’s worth mentioning that to your teachers or head of year when you speak with them. Let them know how much this decision could impact your ability to meet the entry requirements for your course. They may be able to take that into account or help you find a way forward.

In the meantime, it could be worth speaking to your school’s wellbeing team for support. You’ve achieved so much by securing all five offers, and that shows your capability and determination, so keep going!

We hope this helps, but if you have any questions do let us know 😊

Best wishes,
Royal Holloway, University of London Official Rep
