Hi,
Final year medical student at Leicester here. I've found Leicester med school very sociable, we have LUSUMA which is basically a student union specifically for the medics, and they put on a huge range of social events throughout the year as well as running the medics sports and academic societies. This has been really nice as it gets all of the years to mingle and there's always something on.
Leicester is obviously a lot smaller than London but it's still a vibrant city with lots of pubs, bars, restaurants and a few clubs. A great advantage of Leicester is it's very centrally located so you can get to Nottingham, Birmingham and London very easily. It's also a very affordable city meaning your money goes further on a night out!
In terms of the course structure, this really is down to personal preference. Our course is structured into phase one and phase two, with phase one focusing on pre-clinical content (although you still regularly go into the hospital to take histories from patients and examine them) and phase two which consists of full time placement. I found this integrated way of learning helpful as you get to focus on the preclinical content while still being exposed to medicine, and then fully immersing yourself in hospital life from third year onwards.
Please do let me know if you have any specific questions about the course, Leicester or med school life!
Frankie (final year med student)
