A-Level options help !!!

hey guys I want to go into either medicine or dentistry if possible and I need help choosing my third A-Level option after Chemistry and Biology.

I was thinking to pick DT A-Level but I can’t find any conclusive research as to weather it is respected by dental/ med schools or not so I’d really appreciate some advice.
If not, I was thinking of picking either Geography or Psychology, would anybody also know if either of these would be seen as superior over the other or would they be seen as equal (providing DT is unsuitable for me)
Thanks !!!!

Dentistry is very competitive - extremely so. I would absolutely recommend you go for maths / phys, though maybe leaning more maths. DT usually isn’t required and some medical schools don’t list it as a preferred academic subject, so it’s worth checking specific university entry requirements carefully ❣️

Between Geography and Psychology, neither is “superior” in most cases so pick whichever one you will enjoy more and score higher in ❣️

Hi, For dentistry, definitely biology + chemistry are well suited subjects. DT as a subject is in a different category however if you do your research on your desired universities' page you can gage if you would have still met their essential subject choices with chem + bio. I wouldn't say either Geography or psychology are more superior than the other. Weigh up which one you enjoy more and would overall feel confident in undertaking.

Hey!
I have no clue about dentistry but I am going to do med next year so can give some advice on that.
Unless you are wanting Oxbridge, it usually doesnt matter which you pick as your 3rd A level.

If you have any specific unis you are wanting, then have a look at their specific requirements but I havent encountered any which prefer other subjects. The only subjects that they usually exclude are human biology if taking biology already, general studies and another one that I cant remember.

That being said, I do psychology, chem and bio and have found that they overlap quite a lot, especially psych/bio and bio/chem. So it might be worth considering that too.

Please feel free to ask about any of the 3 I do!

For both med and dent in British unis, any third subjects alongside chemistry and biology will be absolutely fine. Dt would be a great choice if you enjoy it and think you can get a good grade in it 🙂

thanks for the advice !! I wanted ask how psych is and what GCSE subject is it comparable too as I don’t really want to be writing superrrr long essays, like maybe 4-5 paragraphs is the max I’d want to do, so with that said do you find psych really essay heavy and is it a lot of memorisation or more logic (like idk how to explain it but take geography for example, yeah u have to remember the steps in which a waterfall forms but they’re logical once you understand erosion and rivers if you know what I mean ?!)
Also how much do chem and bio overlap with psych and which one overlaps more ?
Sorry if it’s a lot to answer but I’d really appreciate your advice !!!

omg really so they wouldn’t distinguish my application from someone who did say psych for their third option. I really enjoy DT but anything that can give me even the slightest advantage I’ll take :frown:

No worries! Psych is SUPER memorisation heavy. The whole of AS is basically just memorising the aim, method/design, procedure, results and conclusion for 20 different studies. If you dont want an essay subject do not do psych. In my last mock I wrote over 10 pages so defo a lot of writing.
I would say that it is probably most similar to History but honestly not very comparable to any GCSE subject (I didnt do GCSE psych)
I think that bio and psych do overlap a bit as you do synapses in both but psych is more leaning on medication application side. BUT if you are doing AQA Bio then you will have to do an essay which you can use the things that you learn in psych as examples of going beyond the spec which you need for over 23 marks

Hope this helps!

Psychology would be more relevant to a medical type route. But geography is a very respectable subject too.
Which one do you thinnk you will enjoy most/think you will get the best grade in?

I'm going to post to follow this discussion as some of the advice given isn't what I'd agree with.
The two things I would advise are:

1. This has to be your own research. You need to check and double check each requirement from every med school or dentistry school that you look at. Some give indications of A Level subject preference, as DerDracologue rightly said above, many med schools don't have a preference for your third A Level.

2. Make sure that the schools/colleges you are interested in definitely offer an A Level in DT and not a parallel "A Level equiv" qualification. Whilst universities may not discriminate between different A Level subjects, many would get snooty against a more vocationally structured qualification that isn't a proper GCE Advanced Level (A-Level) course.

okay so in that case do you agree that it wouldn’t really matter as long as it’d be an a-level, not a BTEC or something else ? I’ve already checked the websites of my target unis and there is no clear indication of what subjects are preferred as a third, but I wanted to know if there’s any de facto third subjects or ones that are more respected out of the three (as like for an example, I’m not sure if this is 100% accurate but for a lot of econ degrees maths isn’t listed as required but most applicants have it)

someone under this post said that psych is very memorisation heavy and very essay heavy, both of which I despise (especially memorisation without logic) and I’ve also seen this rhetoric surrounding a level psych on social media too. So with that in mind I think I’d do better in geo, and also do u have any thoughts on me picking A-Level DT

If the university website doesn't specify, then there is no preference. A university isn't allowed to use secret criteria that they don't publish.

An A Level is an A Level, no subject is objectively better or worse than another and course requirements are either there or not there.

Geography is a very respectable subject. And possibly a bit of a change of scenery from your other science based subjects. I did it both at gcse and a-level and loved it.
I dont have any experience with DT, so cant really comment on that too much. But if you think you will do well in it, then its deffo worth a shot.
How about sociology. I did that myself. It is deffo worth considering.

Hey I was thinking of sociology but I’ve heard that it’s less respected no ? If not, how is the a level, is it similar to psych regarding if it’s very essay heavy and lots of memorisation.
Also for geography, I know ,of course, that a levels are much much harder than GCSEs but did you find that the a level course kind of naturally flowed on and became more difficult than the GCSE course or did you find that it became almost a new subject (as I’ve heard chemistry is at a level when compared to GCSE)
Thanks !!!!

Sociology isnt less respected. You had to do essays for sociology. But it wasnt that bad at all. I found it my easiest subject. Some topics were the same as gcse, some topics were new topics never done before. All were in more detail than gcse.
I found that geography flowed on from gcse. It was similar stuff, but in a lot more detail than gcse. It was more difficult than gcse obviously, but was defo manageable.
