Can I retake year 12 to change a subject?

I’m in Year 12 studying alevels: Economics, Geography and Business and am getting A’s-B’s (solid grades).
However after much research, I actually require Alevel Maths to do the courses I want to do at university for the careers I want to do. Is it possible for me to retake year 12 and change Business to Maths at another sixth form? I was only a couple marks off a 7 in GCSE Maths but will obviously be willing to put in a lot of consistent effort into Maths. I’ve heard sometimes they make resits change every single subject they’re doing ?

Hi, I would firstly advise you to speak to the staff within your sixth form to discuss changing subjects. As you were close to a 7 in GCSE Maths, you have a good chance of catching up.

i’m not sure about every sixth form’s rules but they do sometimes allow people who are one academic year older to retake year 12 (or take it for the first time) but you would have to speak with the school first.
Otherwise, you could always self-study or get private tuition for A-level maths from now until either the regular year 13 assessment period or the year after but you’d need some way to get a predicted grade for which you could maybe ask your school to let you take an exam or something so they can assess you and provide a predicted for the sake of a uni application.
You could also go to colleges that accept older students or those who already have some qualifications as many do but then you might have to completely retake whatever A-levels you’d want to do

Hi!

It’s really good that you’re thinking about this early in Year 12, that gives you quite a lot of options.

In terms of retaking Year 12 and switching a subject, that’s usually a decision made by the sixth form or college. Some sixth forms do allow students to restart Year 12 and change one subject (for example swapping Business for Maths), especially if the new subject is required for the degree you want to study. Others may ask you to restart the full programme with three subjects, while some might allow you to keep your existing subjects and just replace one. It really depends on the individual sixth form’s policy and timetable availability.

Being close to a 7 at GCSE Maths is definitely encouraging, as many sixth forms use grade 7 as the typical entry requirement for A level Maths. If you’re motivated and willing to put in the work, it’s definitely something worth discussing with them.

My advice would be:
Speak to your current sixth form/college first and ask if restarting Year 12 with Maths is possible.
If they can’t offer it, contact other local sixth forms to see what their policy is for Year 12

Hope this helps!
