y13 gyg - 2 months till exams!!!

hi everyone, my name's j and i'm in year 13. my exams are in just less than 2 months. i've been in a study rut for a few weeks and would really like to get out of that, so i've decided to start a gyg thread/blog (i dunno how you call it specifically i've never done this before) to hold myself accountable. if anyone wants to join in and comment (to offer me a bit of support maybe? i'd really appreciate that) then feel free! otherwise it's mostly for me really. i know no one will probably see this but i'm gonna put this out here anyway since the very act of publicly keeping track of my daily revision should hopefully be enough to keep me going

good luck to everyone who has exams this year! especially y13

EDIT: to avoid any potential misunderstanding or confusion i think it'll be helpful to clarify that i am not taking a levels, but IB (international baccalaureate) which is an international sixth form programme that requires students to take 6 subjects not 3 (amongst other things like lots of coursework and stuff). the subjects are split into SL (standard level) and HL (higher level). my SL subjects are french ab initio (basically french language a2-b1), maths, ess (environmental systems and societies, basically a mixture of geography and biology). my HL subjects are geography, history and english language and literature A.

target grade: >42/45 (45 is the highest possible grade) so any >42 is like getting all A*s at a levels! my predicted grade is a 41.

p/s - at the end of every log i will try to include a helpful (and non-bs) study tip OR a study resource (e.g. focus playlist, study-with-me video, etc.) that has helped me in the hope that it will be valuable to someone as well. just thought this would be a nice thing to do since this is a public online space after all.

6 mars 2026 (yes i'm logging the date in french because i want to practice as french is one of my subjects)

french - speaking practice by going through class slides, reviewing topic vocabulary, answering speaking questions, as well as consolidating my listening skills by watching a french movie!

not much today sadly but hopefully i'll be able to do more tomorrow! i'm gonna try and remain positive ~ i think i've made a fairly good start today

7 et 8 mars 2026 (what i did this weekend)

just french revision really because i have a french speaking exam coming up in about a week. i focused on speaking obviously - reviewed some more topic vocabulary, answering speaking questions, watching another french movie (actually really effective for improving your french!!! don't say i'm procrastinating), went through some complex phrases for speaking, and finally revised my grammar (it's the least impressive part of my french lol) and a quizlet set on the 1000 most common french words (and realised with joy that i knew like 99% of the words, believe it or not).

on top of that i also realised that i could now understand a fair amount of the le petit nicolas books and so spent some time reading them (and translating them into english in my head). i hope to be able to read the tintin comics next - maybe i'll try that next week.

one study resource i found helpful this weekend (because i promised - see my original post) - two playlists have really helped me focus: charlie brown holiday hits and paul cardall's christmas

i was a bit too laid back at times but overall i think this was an ok weekend in terms of revision. could have done with revision in other subjects as well though

hi, apologies for the confusion - i'm not doing french a level but french ib (international baccalaureate) which is an entirely different sixth form programme where you have to take 6 subjects not 3 (or 4). french is one of my SL (standard level) subjects and mine is specifically called french ab initio basically meaning french language for beginner's - hence the french i study will be a2-b1 french level only. hope that makes sense and sorry i'm not able to help you out here, but i hope you can find someone who can!

note that on weekdays like today (monday) i'm only able to revise 2-3 subjects since i get home at 4, start studying at 4:30-ish and go to sleep at 11/11:30 so i don't have an awful lot of hours. also i obviously take an hour off or so for dinner. today something else came up too which took an hour off my revision time!

french - listened to some easyfrench (the youtube channel) and watched a few episodes of a french children's show to improve my listening and vocabulary acquisition
english - revised themes and context in the handmaid's tale, as well as context and constructing some timelines in persepolis

i wouldn't say i'm the most studious i've ever been right now but i can definitely feel myself slowly crawling my way out of this study rut! i think i'm improving bit by bit every day so i gotta hold on to that thought!! negativity won't help right now no matter how tempting it is!!

i did a lot of french listening today, still the same drill so i won't repeat myself.

i've been listening to the song 'secret' by the french singer louane (to increase my french exposure mostly but it's also a really nice song) which i really recommend!

i also took some time to plan out my revision for the whole week which is something i haven't really had the energy to do in a while so i guess that means i'm not technically in a study rut anymore...? hopefully it's gonna be a really productive week - i would love to feel productive again for a change.

i just wanna say thank you so much for all those who have paid attention to this lil' gyg so far! i really appreciate it and having the gyg has definitely increased my motivation to study! also it's quite fun to log my revision at the end of every day.

louane is an amazing singer! if you don't already listen to her, i think you might enjoy vendredi sur mer! she's a swiss artist and her music is incroyable

ok so just a heads up i was knocked out tired today because i went to sleep too late last night to do some french (stupid i know, late-night-anything doesn't really help). but anyway i still got some revision done today, not sure how effective it all was though lol but it was better than nothing

french - the usual listening drill
history - went through some cold war essay questions, listened to a bbc podcast on the cold war (not very helpful tbh, the info was quite simple but tbf it was called 'short history of..'), memorised some key historical dates and stats as well as historiography (so for example, cold war historians include people like john lewis gaddis and arthur schlesinger jr.). i ended by doing some cold war quizzes!

a bit unrelated to my studies but i started going to the gym again today! that should help with my focus right (but maybe my body just permanently hates me)

i'm exhausted now so will go to sleep! (yes it is at a much earlier time than yesterday so there's that). here's to more energy for studying tomorrow!!!

study resource: my playlist of movie soundtracks! these contain my favourite soundtracks of all time. they really help me to focus especially when i'm not feeling like it. i've been listening to this playlist for a few years now (since year 11..?) so i can confirm it definitely does work at least for me. sharing it here in the hope that it will help somebody as much as it helps me https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLa_t285i9v_Mdcq01iq31YnkwIXkct0tD&si=Pd8iu2k6ZIAfEnDz (you can also follow me on youtube music if you want! yes i don't use spotify and i'll shout it loud and proud from the rooftops)

french - the usual listening drill. (for extra french exposure ofc) i watched a film called 'j'ai tué ma mère' today which was.... thought-provoking to say the least. i'm not really sure what to think of it but you can check it out yourself if you're interested - i think it's a good watch but it certainly leaves me very conflicted. anyway, i also went through some key (and a few advanced) vocab for my slightly weaker topics like l'environnement and la technologie. this is just so i will have more things to say in my speaking exam next week. it never hurts to be a bit over-prepared.

note: i'm feeling quite happy with my french revision right now tbh (which is a nice surprise) and i think i may actually be ready for the speaking exam next week! if you're reading this and want to wish me luck, please do!!! i would really appreciate it

aaaaand i'm going to sleep at an even earlier time today which is nice - here's to even more energy for studying tomorrow!

maybe today was friday the 13th, maybe i was just not feeling it, but i didn't get as much revision done as i wanted to. i started revising for the unit 'food and health' in geography by going through the syllabus and curating some relevant revision resources (i will work on them more tomorrow). i also watched a documentary called 'what the health' to expand my geographical knowledge - it has good links to the unit specifically about food. this was recommended to me by my geo teacher.

i spent an hour attending a university webinar and pretty much the rest of the evening chatting to a family member about uni accommodation so i didn't get any revision done then.

i've planned a pretty crazy day tomorrow with almost back-to-back revision tasks across 3 subjects - fingers crossed i'll get them all done.
