herts accommodation application

How come we have to choose 5 preferences when applying for accommodation? Is it like that for every university? It means I basically have to choose every option with 52 weeks, even some I really dont wanna get. It feels pretty stupid.
Anyone else annoyed at this or is there something im not getting?

Hi, I understand you are not specifically applying to Lancaster University, however I thought I could offer a bit of advice! The reason you are asked to submit 5 preferences is to ensure everyone's needs and requirements are met and to ensure you get accommodation which suits you, your needs and your budget. I understand this can be frustrating as it means that you have to research all the different accommodation options and you may end up having to put down options which you would not realistically want to get. I applied to York St John University along with Lancaster and even though that was my insurance option, I still had to research all the accommodation there, as well as at Lancaster, and submit accommodation preferences. I understand it is a lengthy process and it can feel a little pointless putting accommodation which you don't really want onto the forms. However, most universities do this just to ensure that everyone gets accommodation which suits their needs and preferences as there are lots of students to allocate to particular accommodation types. It is just to ensure everyone gets at least one of their options. For example, if people were only asked to select one or two options and everybody put those down then the majority of people would end up in accommodation which they did not opt-in for and may have never even seen or researched. So although it can be frustrating, they do this to help you and to try and ensure you get one of your preferred options! A huge good luck to you, your future studies and I hope you get the accommodation you would like! I hope this helps!

Hi! You've probably applied since you posted this but I thought i'd reply anyway, I also thought the super weird part was that it doesn't make you order your choices so they literally don't even know which accom you would prefer?? I just applied the other day and my mum told me to put in the 'extenuating circumstances' box which room I would prefer to get, I just got the offer back today and i got the one i asked for so that's definitely worth a shot (if you haven't received an offer and can change your application) !
