Please help me I’m having a career dilemma

At the start of year 12, i was certain i wanted to go into medicine but recently I have changed my mind because I hate chemistry so much. I’m currently trying to change to Media but my sixth form is being quite slow. I’ve been looking at possibly doing architecture as I would say I am quite a creative person, however I am just worried about my A-level options (Bio, Chem and Drama). I’m worried that some unis would be more likely to reject me because I don’t take art or maths. If I could go back i would have taken Textiles as I did it at gcse but i didn’t take art at gcse. I am willing to take art classes and online courses outside of school for the portfolio part, but i was just wondering if it was worth it due to my A-level options.

If not any other career ideas?? i’m stressed i need to decide soon because i’ve done no super curriculars and have no work experience placements booked since i have no clue what path to go down :frown:

Hi @soyyeung

I'm sorry you are worried about this. Many students experience this, I personally did myself! Universities see this happen all the time and many courses are open to which A-levels you have previously studied. For example The University of Lancashire Architecture Course has no specific A-level courses you must take for architecture. I highly recommend heading onto a few university pages and checking their entry requirements.

Also remember, this situation happens a lot! Personally, when I began sixth form I wanted to studied law or politics, but by I ended up applying for business. Many students change their minds, which is perfectly fine. The fact you are willing to do additional classes to grow a portfolio is also excellent and will help you tremendously!

I honestly wouldn't worry about your A-level choice, just check what your desired universities require. 😊

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)

First, those A-levels are very versitle, so there will be plenty of

Are you in upper or lower sixth?
If you are in lower you can just go back to Y12 and redo, a friend of mine is doing that.
But check the unis requirements. If it says maths or art is not necessary then it is not necessary. They arent saying that to trick you. If your preds are good then you will likely get an offer

Hello,

For architecture you don’t need to study an art a-levels. A lot of universities do not have an A-levels subjects requirement (only required grade). Instead for architecture, you will most likely be asked to create a portfolio and discuss it on your interview, this is where you’ll show your art side.
Overall, architecture is a great choice and if you’re satisfied with your decision after researching the degree.
