Student Finance

I am currently in year 13 and have applied for Modern Languages at university and have got offers from all of my universities. I am considering doing a gap year but haven't made my mind up. Does anyone know when I should apply for student finance if I decide to do a gap year, and is there a deadline for student finance for starting in 2026?

Hiya,

Yes, you can still apply for student finance if you decide you want to take a gap year. If you defer your place at university and start in 2026, you will apply for student finance the year you start university, not during your gap year. This means you will be applying for student finance in 2026, which is the year you start university.

For most students who go to university in England, student finance applications usually open in March, and the recommended deadline for applying is May, so you can be assured of receiving your student finance before you start university. If you start university in 2025, you would apply for student finance in spring 2025. If you decide to take a gap year and start in 2026, you would apply in spring 2026 instead, so there is no need to apply now if you plan to defer.

Congratulations on receiving offers from all of your universities as well. That’s a great position to be in.
