Accommodation at Uni

Hi, I have applied for biology or biological sciences at Bristol, Cardiff, Bath, Exeter, and York and have received offers from both but Bath, which is currently my top choice.
I am supposed to have guaranteed offer as I did Pathways yet they still haven't got back to me.
I know that the accommodation applications across the unis will be live soon, if not already and I have been considering what I want in my room etc.
I definitely want en-suite and will be applying for as many en-suite choices that I can.
Since I know this can be hard to come by I have thought of having no extra preferences, like quiet or alcohol-free so that this can up my chances of having en-suite?
I'm not sure if that's how it works and that if I have less preferences, I have a higher chance of en-suite, just a thought.
if anyone has any knowledge on this side of choosing accommodation then I'll appreciate any feedback
Hi there 😊

I am a 3rd year student at the University of Bath so I can help with a little on accommodation.

Here is the website which has all the information about the accoms.
https://reslife.bath.ac.uk/accommodation

For our university managed accommodations, we don't offer a "first come first serve basis" which I think is a fair way to allocate students with accommodations. However Bath has to be your firm choice in order to be guaranteed accommodation. We have both campus and city accomms which some do offer ensuite as well so feel free to check this out!

Because of the system we use to allocate accoms, it is difficult to say whether you'll get ensuite or shared. I think the overall advice is if you would like ensuite is to put majority (5-6) and then a few shared so that you're not too disappointment if there are no ensuite options available.

For myself I got my top option but then I know friends who put all ensuite and then got their 6th option so it can differ from person to person. I know at the end of the day sharing is not too bad and there are plenty of toilets and showers that my friends didn't have to wait for.

I hope this helps and best of luck!

Hi, do you have any recommendation for private accommodation not associated with university. I will be moving to bath for my placement year - not too fussed about the style of accommodation but preferably en-suite

Hey hey @m_tylda I know a student rep for the Uni of Bath has given a great response already, but I thought it was worth also sharing my experience and what other students tend to experience really 🙂

What I have learnt is that most universities tend to allocate rooms mainly based on:

when you apply

availability in each hall

and honestly sometimes just random allocation

The preferences do matter, but are usually just used to match you with the right flat if and when possible. So strategies most people use is:

Applying as early as you can

Selecting multiple en-suite options across different halls (unless of course told otherwise)

Avoiding choosing only one specific hall

I would say also to not stress too much, a lot of first years want en-suite and most unis do have quite a few en-suite rooms.

I also noticed you said you are waiting on a Pathways guaranteed offer, if the wait has been a longer than expected, it is always worth emailing admissions to just check if everything is okay.

I hope this was somewhat helpful and I wish you all the best 🙂

Hi @m_tylda,

Congratulations on all your offers! 🎉

At York, we don't ask students to specify additional preferences such as alcohol-free or quiet rooms, as unfortunately we’re unable to guarantee these when allocating accommodation.

In our accommodation application, you can select up to seven accommodation preferences (preferences are ranked 1 to 7, with 1 being the most preferred and 7 being the least preferred). Of these, up to four can be ensuite options, with the remaining three having to be shared bathroom options. I can see that you're keen to have an ensuite room, so I'd recommend that you put your four ensuite accommodation options at the top of your list and the shared bathroom options towards the end of your preference list. If you're offered a room you're not happy with after Results Day, there are options available, such as finding a room swap with another student.

I hope this helps, let us know if you have any other questions!
