University choices- Geography

I've received all of my offers to study geography at university. UCL, Durham, Bristol, York and Manchester. I'm mainly interested in the Human aspects of geography except from at Bristol I applied for the BSc, but you can do human anyways. I can't decide where to go. Does anyone have any advice on where to pick.

Hiya!!

Congratulations on your offers! Those are honestly a fantastic set to choose from. 🥳

Since you're mainly interested in Human Geography, Durham is definitely worth strong consideration because the course is very flexible and the Human Geography side of the department is particularly strong. Ensure you have properly checked out the Geography course page here. Also look at Student Life - Geography Department.

A few things that might help with your decision:

1. Durham Geography has a really strong reputation.

It’s consistently one of the top geography departments in the UK (1st for Geography in The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026), and the Human Geography research here is internationally recognised. That feeds directly into teaching as lots of lecturers are leading researchers in areas like:

political geography

social inequality

urban change

environmental governance.

2. The course structure gives you flexibility.
Even if you start on the BA or BSc, you still get a mix of human and physical in first year, and then you specialise much more in second and third year. If you prefer human geography, you can absolutely focus on modules like:

social and cultural geography

geopolitics

development

urban and economic geography.

3. Fieldwork is a big part of the degree.
Durham geography students do lots of fieldwork, which many people say is one of the best parts of the course. There are UK trips in earlier years, including first year!

4. Student experience / community.
One of the biggest differences compared to places like UCL or Manchester is the college system. Your college becomes your main social hub, which means:

it's easier to meet people outside your course

lots of societies, sports and formals through college

a strong sense of community and pastoral support

So many more opportunities and wider university life you can get involved with

Durham is also a much smaller city, which some people love because everything is walkable and very student-focused. It’s quite a different lifestyle compared to somewhere like London or Manchester.

5. Career prospects.
Durham geography graduates go into a wide range of areas like:

consulting

policy and government

environmental organisations

finance and business.

The department also has strong links with employers and offers lots of opportunities for placements and internships.

I would advise you to;
Think about the type of university environment you want, because academically all five are excellent.
For example: UCL / Manchester / Bristol big city universities with a very urban lifestyle whereas Durham / York smaller historic cities with a more campus-style feel and tight student communities

Check out this playlist of student content and blogs about studying Geography here at Durham;

All of your university options are amazing - anywhere you choose will be great! Remember to choose what is right for you and where you can see yourself living the most -that is the most important thing when deciding. Best of luck! If you have any further questions about Geography, colleges or general student life - feel free to reach out and ask.

Good afternoon,

The Whatuni website is good for Find A Course, as it offers a comprehensive list with reviews. Similarly, the UCAS website has tips on comparing undergraduate courses and universities, which is a great way to narrow down your options.

It is a very personal decision, so I recommend reaching out to our ambassadors and reviewing the course reviews and modules. This should help you come to an informed decision.

Choosing a university depends on what you want from your university experience. Every student wants something slightly different, such as lecture style or exam vs no exams. I always recommend deciding what you want from your university and writing a list. You can compare the two universities to your own criteria; this means the university will be the best fit for you.

All the best,
Ella
