Choosing Law at Canterbury: no one tells you*
When I first started looking at Law degrees, I kept seeing the same buzzwords everywhere: “prestigious,” “competitive,” “respected.” Helpful, but also, what does that look like in real life?
Studying at the LLB at Canterbury Christ Church is a lot more human and a lot less scary than the internet makes it seem. The first thing that stands out here is how personal it feels. You’re not just Student Number 574 in a giant lecture theatre. Classes are small enough that your tutors know your name, remember what you’re interested in, and will call you out (in a good way) if you’re hiding at the back. It makes a huge difference when you’re tackling things like contract law or criminal law for the first time, and you don’t feel stupid asking questions.
The campus vibe also helps more than you’d think. Canterbury is a proper student city, but it’s not overwhelming. After a heavy seminar on legal reasoning, you can literally be in town, grabbing coffee or sitting by the cathedral with your notes, in a few minutes. It sounds minor, but having spaces where you can breathe between classes really matters when you’re doing a course like Law. Another thing people don’t really talk about is how practical the LLB can be. Yes, you’ll do the core, serious law stuff you need if you want to go down the solicitor or barrister route. But you also get chances to build skills that feel real-world: mooting, debating, learning how to structure an argument so it makes sense to someone who isn’t a lawyer, even just getting used to reading cases without panicking at the length.
Honestly, Law isn’t only for people who are “100% sure” they want to be lawyers. A lot of students pick it because they like arguing their point, they’re curious about how rules work in real life, or they want a degree that keeps doors open in things like business, government, policy, or even marketing and communications later. The LLB at Canterbury gives you that mix: proper legal training, but also space to figure yourself out.
