How to choose between similar courses

There is a particular kind of stress that hits you in year 12 and 13 about choosing between so many similar yet slightly different courses. But you don’t need to be overwhelmed if you’re strategic with how you choose your course. Here’s a guide to help with that.

Check course structure and modules

Look at compulsory and optional units. Some courses may offer more leadership, specialised skils like coding, or lab experience, while others focus on theory.

Think about career pathways

Which course aligns with your long-term goals? Would you like to be in research, education, or applied and physical problem solving? For example, physics opens doors to research, tech, and finance, whilst engineering leans toward design, construction, and applied problem-solving.

Consider flexibility

Some courses allow you to switch specialisations, are dual degrees (e.g., psychology with criminology) or allow you to take optional modules. This can be a safety net if your interests shift.

Talk to real students on open days:

Get insight on the actual content and workload, or look at online forums where people share their experiences in the courses you are interested in.

Lastly, take it slowly and don’t over stress yourself, it will all work out in time but it’s better to start thinking about your course options early on.

Have you started choosing between similar degrees? If so, what made you set your mind on one?
