A-Level help

I am currently in year 12 studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics and History for my A-levels. My GCSEs were 999988887 and my target grade for a level is an A*. I’m pretty much set on studying Maths at a university like Imperial, UCL or Cambridge. The workload for History is a lot and although I can keep up I really do not care about it very much at all. All the university courses i’m applying for only require A*s in Maths and Further Maths , and I wanted to know if i am disadvantaged by studying only Maths , Further Maths and Physics. I know i can reach much higher grades in these subjects if I don’t have history , so please anyone in a similar situation or anyone that could help please advise me. Thank you!

Hi,

What course are you planning to apply to?
Since Maths and Further maths is what those universities require, then you will not be disadvantaged if you drop history. Since removing history will help you achieve better grades then this step will strengthen your application instead of disadvantage it.

Maths, Further Maths and Physics are perfectly fine. So, you can drop History. 🙂

I plan on applying for mathematics. Even though the website says i only require maths and further maths, do you think 4 A-Levels makes me a stronger applicant or will they most likely ignore my 4th grade?

Okay thank you, do you think a fourth a level would strengthen my application or would my 4th grade most likely be ignored? And would I be at a disadvantage to other applicants with 4A* predicted rather than 3?

Offers are made on 3 A-Levels always. However, Imperial sometimes makes a lower offer with 4 A-Levels.

Okay, thank you. Also, sorry for so many questions, but do you know of anyone in that has successfully got offers from top universities with just maths , fm and physics?

For degrees in Maths, Physics, Engineering and Computer Science lots of applicants get offers at the top universities with Maths, Further Maths and Physics A-Levels. 🙂

Hey, I’m in Year 13 and I take Maths, Further Maths, and Physics, and I’m planning to study Engineering at university. I also took History in Year 12, but I decided to drop it. Personally, I love History, but the workload was a lot, and you need to prioritise the subjects that will actually help you get into the university course you want.

My advice would be: if your subjects are already at an A* level, you’ve found a good balance with your workload, and you still really want to keep History, then stick with it. However, the workload gets much bigger in Year 13. There is a large coursework component, which can take up a lot of time and may set you back in your other subjects while you’re also balancing things like UCAS applications.

I would recommend talking to your teachers (including your maths teacher) and getting advice from them. Most importantly, make the decision based on what is best for you, not what other people tell you to do.

Universities don’t actually require you to do four A-levels. In some cases, taking four can even make it harder to achieve the top grades you need to get in. That said, it won’t necessarily make a huge difference if you are aiming for top universities.

Good luck!!

Hey, thank you so much this is so helpful!! I am in the exact same situation as you were, I really enjoy history but the workload and essays are so difficult to balance alongside 3 demanding stem subjects. I am going to talk to my teachers and head of sixth form on Monday to discuss my options , as I truly believe this is the best option for me in reaching my full potential in subjects I am passionate about. Good luck for university, I wish you all the best and thank you again!!

If the course you want only requires only maths and further maths, then yes, feel free to get rid of history if you arent doing as well in it. As its your 4th subject, you will still have your other 3.

Hmm I feel like you should just drop history since you don’t even enjoy it much anyways from the sounds of it. Also it’s mainly your grades and depending on the uni you may have to sit some type of math admissions exam for which ur results in that test will matter too so you’d rather spend u time on that

Hi,

The 4 A-levels will likely make you a stronger applicant but keep in mind that having 3 A-levels with high grades is better than having 4 A-levels with lower grades. Consider how manageable the 4 A-levels will be and if it’s possible time-wise.

You have your other 3 subjects, which you sound like you will do well in and get the required grades in. So in that case i would drop history.
You could always do an epq or other extra curricular stuff on the side anyway.
