DSA and accomodation

Due to medical reasons i would need an accommodation that is close to whatever building most of my lectures are in , can a university give me priority when getting accommodation so i can assure i'm in the best accommodation for me and also on the ground or first floor? and also if the closest accommodation is out of my price range because i'm on a very limited budget is this something a DSA can cover , like give me money towards paying towards the accommodation?

It obviously depends on the uni, so you’d have to email to ask, but I’d say nearly all unis would give you priority for accom proximity due to your disability. The cost thing is a bit more variable, but some unis would defo do it, for example one of my friends with autism only had to pay the price of a shared bathroom accom as she needed an en-suite because of her disability. I’d recommend getting in contact with the uni wellbeing/disability team and the accommodation people asap.

The DSA position is, if you are living in accommodation owned or controlled by the university, then they have an obligation to provide you with suitable accommodation for your needs. At no extra charge.

If you go in to a private rental then DSA can fund the additional costs eg if you need to pay more for an en-suite because of a disability. However you will need to provide clear medical evidence of your need for the specific type of accommodation for funding to be considered

Speak to the disability team and they can advise. The earlier you let them know the easier it will be to get allocated what you need.
