Reapply to veterinary medicine

Hi guys,
I hope you’re all well. I was predicted four A*s and applied to four universities for vetmed, including RVC, but the only offer I received was from the University of Liverpool. I’m really grateful to have the offer, but the thing is that I’ve always wanted to study veterinary medicine at the RVC. It has been my dream for a long time, and recently it’s almost turned into an obsession.
I think part of it is because of its reputation. I come from a traditional Asian family where relatives often judge you based on where you studied. Growing up in that environment has made me care a lot about both overall and subject QS rankings. I’m not saying Liverpool isn’t a good university, it absolutely is, but it just doesn’t have the same reputation as the RVC in my mind.
I also know that many people going into vetmed don’t really care about ranking and will probably think that I don’t like this course enough, and that wherever I get graduated from, I still get the same degree. I think the situation is just a bit more complicated for me.
Well, because of this, I’ve been thinking about reapplying to the RVC next year. However, since they don’t allow you to reapply while studying the same course at another university, it would mean taking a gap year, which feels like a big risk. VetMed is so competitive, and I’m worried about ending up with nowhere to go next year.
At the same time, if I go to Liverpool, I’m worried that I might not fully enjoy the five years there and could end up regretting not trying again for the RVC for the rest of my life. I honestly don’t know what to do. Thank you so much.

Here is a thing

You don't know what may or may not happen. You might make the best friends in Liverpool, while you would be unhappy at RVC due to bad luck. Or vice-verse. You might be able to find what you exactly love about vet med or no.

And if anything you can always do residency at RVC. I got rejected twice by RVC (pre-interview and once post-interview) and now I am simply thinking about doing residency with them.

Personally I would say turning down your offer is a huge risk. Vet Med is such a competitive course to get on to and most people are grateful for any offer, wherever it may be. Setting your heart on RVC really isn’t a good idea unfortunately. Most vet schools are looking for a certain ‘type’ that they feel fit their particular way of teaching and each school is different in that way. The fact you’ve already been rejected by RVC once possibly shows that you’re not the right person for them so there’s no guarantee you’ll have any more chance next time.

How would you feel if you turned Liverpool down and were then rejected by all your choices, including RVC, in the next cycle? You would potentially have lost your chance at studying veterinary medicine for good.

I think maybe sitting down with your family members and making sure they’re fully aware of how difficult the application process is and how lucky you are to have received an offer would be very beneficial.

I fully believe that things happen for a reason. My daughter had had her heart set on RVC and she was devastated when she was rejected. Luckily she had an offer from Liverpool and she absolutely loved it there (she graduated five years ago now).
She says she was so glad she went to Liverpool, rather than RVC! She met her boyfriend (now fiancé) during second year of vet school and she also made the most amazing friends for life there too.
Think extremely carefully before you make any rash decision.

Hiya. I’m an Asian mum (but second generation so maybe a bit diluted) so I know where you’re coming from. But I think you have to weigh up how much you want to be a vet with how much you want to satisfy your family. Liverpool vet a great course and well accredited. I think you would be taking a risk turning down a great opportunity for something that might not happen next year. Also, if rankings mean a lot to you, Liverpool vet ranked no.2 in the Times Good University rankings 2026.

i’m a graduate entry student who stupidly only applied for rvc 202, got an interview and then rejected and then applied again this year for multiple vet schools including rvc and ended up with an offer from surrey. i would say getting even 1 offer to study veterinary medicine is such a huge achievement and i really wouldn’t advise jeopardising that over the reputation of rvc when there’s no guarantee you’ll get in next time. i personally think if they reject u once they are unlikely to want you a year later (im sure some people have been successful but i think the chances are small) id defo go for ur liverpool offer!

as you said, this would be a really risky decision......

Getting an offer is amazing and I agree that everything happens for a reason! I agree heard so many people apply and re apply and still not get the offer! All the vet schools are amazing and your journey will be fantastic! Concentrate on getting the grades now! Have you also an insurance?

My daughter was keen for Liverpool and that was the rejection! She now has 2 amazing offers and is so very lucky and I agree the journey wherever will be wonderful. GOOD LUCK!

This is true while the RVC ranks highly the results on the NSS are pretty poor when it comes to student satisfaction expecially compared to Nottingham for eg which ranks lower.
