Question for current MPharm student

Hi,

I am starting MPharm this September hopefully and I was wondering how do students note take in lectures? What type of equipment should I bring with me?
I have a laptop and iPad so would it be a good idea to bring both of them or should I bring an actual notebook too and pencil case? If you do use laptop and iPad what are the best apps to use to note take? Also, do I need stuff like folders/binders?

Thanks!
Good afternoon ☺️,

I am a current pharmacy student at the University of Bath so hopefully I can provide some advice.

In my cohort which I suspect is the same with other course, we have a variety of ways people like to take notes in a lecture. For examples I prefer using my laptop and anki whereas one of my friends likes pen and paper. Others also used iPad which I did in first year but I found it more efficient to use my laptop. So find what ways best work well for yourself - I think in the first couple of weeks try out all the methods and then you'll find one thats suits you!

I found in first year I would use pen and paper as there was a more chemistry module so when practicing I found that to be useful. Here at Bath, the lecture slides are also uploaded before the actual lecture so it gives me some time to read through the information before hearing what the lecturer may add to the information.

I use notion and anki which I found works for me. I know some friends who use Quizlet, Goodnotes, Microsoft Page as well. I would say before lectures start have all this organised so you can get started straight away!

In some of the workshop/ group work, we get handed a lot of paper so I would recommend having a binder to hand so you can organise your notes. But it may differ from uni to uni but it is always handy to have.

I hope this helps and best for luck when starting in September

Not a pharmacist but I have written a thread about going to medical school which may be very useful if you want to know how you might go about studying a content-dense course at University and how to take notes or make the most of Anki.

Hi,

As a pharmacy student, I usually bring both my iPad and MacBook, but I tend to use my iPad more for note-taking on GoodNotes. I also see many students during lectures who type on laptops or prefer pen and paper, so it really depends on the type of learner you are and what works best for you.

You don’t really need to bring folders or binders to lectures, but it’s useful to have them at home to keep worksheets and notes organised by module, which makes revision much easier.

Hope this helps,

Hi! ☺️

I am currently a first-year pharmacy student at Kingston University, so I will try my best to answer your questions!

From what I have seen, there are a few ways that students note-take in lectures. A lot of people use iPads to follow along with the lecture slides and annotate them with additional things the lecturers have said that may not be on the slides. A few people do use pen and paper to write their notes. Others also use their laptops and type out their notes, or they start making their flashcards straight from the lectures slides.

Personally, I am only using a laptop as that is all I have right now. I then like to use Notion to type out my notes as I like the organisation system I am using, it fits how I study. Next year, I am looking to purchase an iPad with the pencil. I find that there are additional information that the lecturers say but do not include in the slides, so I would like to annotate the slides and then, type out my notes afterwards. From I have seen from my friends and from my peers, Notability, GoodNotes, Anki, and Quizlet are very popular apps.

In KU, for sessions like workshops, seminars, practicals etc. they do like to give out paper handouts and booklets so if your uni is like that too, I would highly recommend having some sort of folder/binder just to keep all of your papers organised!

Most importantly, you should do what you feel is best for you and for how you study/revise. First-year is the best time to go through trial and error - try out contrasting techniques. You might also find that you like to use different techniques for different modules as each module could be taught differently.

I am happy to hear that you are starting MPharm next year! I hope you enjoy it, just like I am so far! If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate to ask! ☺️
