Transport links in and around Leicester

One thing that’s really convenient about studying in Leicester is how well connected the city is. Both De Montfort University and the University of Leicester are close to the city centre, which makes getting around fairly easy whether you’re commuting locally or travelling further.

If you’re studying at De Montfort University, a lot of key places are within walking distance. The city centre is roughly a 5–10 minute walk and the main bus station at Haymarket Bus Station is about 10 minutes away. The train station, Leicester Railway Station, is around a 15–20 minute walk, so it’s very accessible if you need to travel further.

Leicester has a strong bus network connecting the city centre with different areas across the city. This can be useful for students living further out or travelling to places like Fosse Park, which is only a short bus ride away.

Leicester also has the Leicester Hop! Free City Centre Shuttle, which is a free bus that runs around the city centre and stops at key locations such as the train station, shopping areas and other central spots.

There’s also the Hospital Hopper Bus, which is a free bus service for De Montfort University students. It runs between the university, the main hospital sites and other key locations such as Leicester Railway Station, which can be especially helpful for students travelling to placements or commuting into the city.

From Leicester Railway Station, you can get direct trains to major cities such as London, Birmingham, Nottingham and Sheffield, which makes travelling home or visiting other cities fairly convenient.

If you need to travel internationally, East Midlands Airport is about a 30–40 minute drive from Leicester and can also be reached using public transport.
Overall, Leicester is a well-connected city, which makes travelling locally or across the UK fairly straightforward for students.

If you’re a student in Leicester, how do you usually get to and around the city? Do you mainly walk, use buses, or travel by train?
