Hi everyone,
I’m a psychology student at De Montfort University in the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences, and I wanted to give a behind-the-scenes look at how our faculty works — and how students across all courses are involved.
One of the things I really appreciate is how much students are included in shaping their education. Every year we elect course reps and faculty reps. These reps don’t just attend meetings — they feed back on teaching, assessments, placements, facilities, and even lab equipment. They make sure student concerns are heard, suggest improvements, and keep us updated on changes.
For example, in my psychology course, we raised that some computers in the labs weren’t working and that some seminar timetables clashed with another group. Staff took this seriously and are working to resolve it. While this example is from psychology, similar issues and improvements happen across the faculty — reps from nursing, biomedical sciences, paramedics, and other courses all have their voices heard, helping to improve teaching, facilities, and student support for everyone in HLS.
The faculty isn’t just lecturers and seminars. There’s a whole team behind the scenes: placement staff, admin staff, welfare and support teams, and academic advisors — all working to make sure courses run smoothly and that students have the resources and support they need.
Students can also influence upgrades to lab equipment, software, study spaces and teaching resources. It’s reassuring to see that our voices genuinely matter and lead to real improvements across the faculty.
Being a course or faculty rep is a great way to see this in action and help improve the student experience for everyone in HLS - this is a behind-the-scenes look from a student perspective.
