Pre-registration masters funding.

Hi

I feel like I’m going round in circles so thought I’d post here and ask for advice so any would be great!

I have a BA in social work, which I completed in 2022. I am looking at retraining in something else and have been looking a lot at pre registration masters in other health and allied health professions like nursing, speech and language therapy, physio and OT.

I work with quite a few people who did the social work msc, they have all told me that they had to get a “postgrad loan” (which I understood to be for a 1 year “normal” masters). But my own research is saying that I would apply for student finance as if it was an undergrad and that it would I would be entitled to tuition fee loans, and maintenance fee loans, as well as the NHS grants etc.

But I think I’ve just researched to death and listened to people who don’t know what they are talking about? Can anyone confirm what the funding situations are for these kind of masters please?

Hi there,

When would your course start? Can you confirm what university you will attend, the full name of the course and how long does the course last?

Thanks, Drew

So I don’t have a specific course in mind just yet, I’m currently researching but I have been looking at pre registration masters in the university of Essex, Hertfordshire and some London ones. Mostly occupational therapy, nursing, and paramedic science. But all are 2 year preregistration masters courses, leading to accreditation in the related field.

I have not applied yet and am not going to apply until I have clarity around funding as there’s no point applying to then not get necessary funding. However I would be aiming to start September 2026 or 2027 depending on course availability.

My question is more if a general one, in terms of these kind of courses what is the funding entitlement for those who already have a BA and which to retrain. I’ve had multiple different responses from many different people about how they got funding for theirs (I have spoken to two who recently graduated from paramedic science, some social
Worker colleagues and a nurse and they all haven’t different advice. As did AI.).

Hi there,

We fund Allied Health Professional Courses (AHP) under our undergraduate funding currently. I have listed these below. The funding would be Tuition Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan and Supplementary Grants if applicable.

Funding on a new AHP or NHS course will be exempt from previous study and ELQ rules. Therefore, if the student already holds a degree or has previous study they will still be eligible to access the full package of funding (so long as they are not already registered in the field they are planning to study).

Chiropody

Dental hygiene (Honours degree, diploma or foundation degree)

Dental therapy (Honours degree, diploma or foundation degree)

Dental hygiene and dental therapy (Joint or dual honours)

Dietetics

Dietetics and nutrition*

Midwifery (Degree Level)

Nursing (Degree Level)

Nursing and social work (Dual honours)

Nurse Paramedic Course (Edge Hill University only)

Occupational therapy

Operating department practice (Degree or diploma level)

Orthoptics

Physiotherapy

Podiatry

Prosthetics and Orthotics

Radiography

Radiotherapy

Speech and language therapy

Paramedic Science courses are only classed as an exception if the student is entitled to funding from the Ambulance Service Trust. If they are not eligible for support from the Ambulance Service Trust they can apply to us for full support, but this will be subject to ELQ rules.

Thanks,
Claire
