Choosing UofG for Mathematics

I graduated from my Mathematics degree in July 2025 after firming my offer in 2021. For anyone curious about doing a Mathematics degree or choosing it as an elective, here is a space for you to ask questions and hear about my recent experience!

Practicalities
The range of subjects you study within Mathematics is wide. From calculus, to algebra, coding, and abstract mathematics, at UofG you are exposed to a very diverse world of mathematics.

In the first two years, everyone studies the same core modules. These set you up for success by laying down the foundation you would need to figure out what you enjoy and what you don’t. In the process, you might find that you are terrified of pure maths (as I did) but thrilled by specialised methods (such as methods) this is the goal. The course makes it so that you can learn what you love and what you wish to leave behind while also supplying you with the skills you need to do well.

It is challenging. The library walls have seen many many many hours (some frustrated, some productive, some confused) of me and my many books. It requires effort and sometimes sacrifice. But it is gratifying, satisfying when you recognise your own growth within the field, and most importantly it challenges you to better yourself with resilience and organisation. (If you are curious about where you can spend all these study hours, see https://www.youtube.com/shorts/vPrd-44jKOY).

My favourite subjects:

1.

Group theory despite later deciding that abstract maths wasn’t for me, I initially really enjoyed group theory. Learning about how to notice patterns across different groups of elements and how they follow mathematical trends was fascinating, but equally challenging.

2.

Mathematical biology a subject focused on modelling biological phenomena using partial differential equations. I was particularly fascinated by how tumour growth can be drawn using mathematical equations. It was a hard subject, but a rewarding one. It was unique and provided some real-life perspective on what mathematics can truly do in the real world.

3.

Mathematical finance along with a lot of formulas and calculations, learning about the behind-the-scenes of how mortgages are calculated, how investing works, and what pensions and annuities look like in numbers was very practical. Not only was the subject interesting, but it was relevant to our daily lives.

Bonuses
I am a mathematician with a heart for literature, philosophy, and the arts. With one foot in STEM and another in Arts and Humanities, I was drawn especially because of how, at UofG, I could be both versions of myself. In my first and second years, I studied English Literature and Philosophy as electives. I was able to channel my creative-self while also connecting with the mathematics world. This was something I never thought would be possible.

If you hold an offer from UofG, our Offer Holder Open Day is coming up this March 31st! See here for a Welcome to Offer Holder Open Day! Come discover what studying Maths at UofG can be like :u:
