mental health nursing undergrad

I’m starting a mental health nursing course at Nottingham Trent in September. What do I need, does anyone have any experiences in the course and know what they provide and what I’ll need to buy ahead of time, in any uni as it probably is the same

Hi Jess, I’m not doing nursing myself (I’m starting biomedical science), but I’ve been on a gap year volunteering in the science department at my old college and I’ve met/worked with a few people who’ve gone into nursing. From what they’ve said you don’t usually need to buy loads before you start because most unis provide things like the uniform for placements. They mostly just recommended having a decent laptop, a small notebook you can carry around on placement, and a fob watch. I’d probably wait until the course starts before buying anything big because they normally tell you exactly what you’ll need. Good luck starting in September!

You'll need a laptop, decent (smart, black) shoes for placement, maybe a fob watch.

Uniform will be supplied by the university. Any books, textbooks, journals, etc will be available via the university library, either as ebook or hard copy.

Hi @Jess.L2,

We're looking forward to welcoming you this September!

I would agree with the advice above - study materials are a must, depending on how you best work, but a decent laptop and other stationary are a must, including a smaller pocket notebook. The good news is students at NTU have access to a suite of software such as Microsoft Office apps as well as any required for your course, so you'll likely be covered on that front!

I'd heavily recommend looking at comfortable, sturdy smart shoes for placement as well. There are around 2300 hours of placement and practical time to qualify across the course, and a good amount of it is spent up and active - good shoes can be a lifesaver after a long day!

I hope this helps, let us know if you have any questions!
