Unusual Subjects - But I still meet requirements

I am studying A level - Law, Geology and Statistics.

I want to study geology at university but one of my subjects is law.
I cannot change it now. My question is : As long as I meet the requirements can I still apply? And wouldnt I be at a disadvantage compared to students doing different subjects, e.g Biology, Chemistry

Hi,

Yeah you can definitely still apply. Most geology courses don’t actually require very specific A level combinations, usually they just ask for certain grades and sometimes one science or maths subject. Since you’re doing geology and statistics already that’s actually quite relevant. Law won’t disadvantage you either. Universities are usually more interested in whether you meet the grade requirements and show interest in the subject. Plenty of people apply with a mix of subjects and still get offers. Biology or chemistry can be helpful background knowledge for some parts of geology, but it’s not something you’re expected to already know everything about. First year normally covers the fundamentals anyway so everyone starts from a similar level. If geology is what you want to study, your subject combination shouldn’t stop you applying at all. It might just be worth checking the specific entry requirements for the universities you’re interested in, just to make sure you meet them.

Hello, thank you so much, that has cleared it up for me! Yes, I will only apply to universities which I meet the requirements for in terms of subjects. Thank you!

If u meet the entry requirements for example, one science subject, yes u can still apply
Also as long as ur subjects are accepted by the uni they won’t pick favourites over whose done what subjects
Ik someone’s whose applied to the same course as me at the same time i do boi, chem & psych and she does btechs but we both got offered a place on the same course around the same week
Honestly ensure u research the degree incase u have an interview and make sure you’ve done the right work experience so u can strengthen ur personal statement and shine out from other applicants

Oh okay thank you!
My main issue is finding like relevant work experience because there aren't many opportunities near me, and if i did find one it would be one hour away. So, does it have to be completely relevant?

If you meet the requirements you will be fine. That said some courses in geology/earth sciences might require two sciences or A-level Maths, but I have no doubt you will meet the requirements for plenty

Taking A-level Law as your third subject won't be a disadvantage for those that don't formally require a second science or A-level Maths!

Work experience is not required not expected for a degree in geology/earth sciences. If something is available then by all means pursue it if you can/want to, but it won't make or break an application. Admissions tutors are aware not all students have equal opportunity to pursue relevant work experience opportunities. They will however expect you to do relevant wider reading in your subejct area (as they do expect all students to have access to the internet and a library!)
