Lancashire illustration or fine art

so I'm thinking of applying next year (class of 2027) and while it's quite far away I'm a little anxious and would like a specific course to work toward and be excited about. Back on topic I want to try be a concept artist and have been looking at university of Lancashire and I'm debating doing the illustration course or the fine art one. currently I'm doing a level 3 art and design course at my college in my second year and afterwards I'll be moving to a foundation course here still then hopefully university.
in short I wanna draw silly concept story pictures and idk which course would be better for it. thank you

Hi @koroshroom,

It's great to hear that you are interested in studying with us and are exploring your options! 🙂

It's great to hear that you are doing an art and design course, I studied a course similar to this and then also moved onto a foundation course in art and design before studying at university of Lancashire. I believe the courses you are doing and plan on completing will give you great transferable skills to become a concept artists and to be able to study a degree.

If I'm right a concept artist creates designs for media, films and games? Please correct me if I'm wrong! I think both fine art and Illustration would be great for that in terms of various skill sets. Illustration would really develop your skills in story telling where as fine art would allow you to really nail the form, colour theory and so on. I do think illustration might be more fitting in terms of it's modules and what you would do. You can find much more detail about our Illustration course here. Feel free to explore the page if you haven't already, but let me give you some more context within this thread thought 🙂

You'll have opportunities to create live project work for industry connections. Including the Macmillan Prize for Children’s Book Illustration, D&AD Student Design Awards, and the Association of Illustrators’ World Illustration Awards. And professional organisations like Tate Liverpool. This is a studio-based course where you can make use of the very latest digital and printing facilities. You’ll get the opportunity to spend a semester or a year studying overseas. I studied with a placement option and I couldn't recommend it more. It really gave me confidence working in industry settings, taught me more transferable skills and allowed me to make connections.

100% of our Illustration students were positive about the academic support on the course-National Student Survey (Illustration)2025

I would recommend giving our course enquirers an email or a call, to discuss which course they think is best for the career you are thinking of going down. You can contact them on [email protected] or via +44 (0)1772 892 400 (Option 1)

Open days, are also a great way to decide between courses and are something I always recommend to applicants. Our next one is coming up in June. Saturday 20 June. If you are interested, please book onto it here. It's a great chance to speak with lecturers, explore the great facilities and get answers to any of your questions. For me it's also great to see if you could imagine yourself studying at the campus 🙂

Sorry for the overload of information 😆but feel free to ask if you do have any further questions whether it's about the school of arts or university life!

Best wishes in the rest of your studies,
^Zac
